what to buy?

Post by Saulnier »

I am buying an XD in the near future for CCW. I would also like to beable to use it in some shooting competitions such as IDPA.
I am currently carrying a barrowed Smith and Wesson Model 910 chambered in 9mm.
I am very interested in the 40 cal XD's. Probably a service model or the Tacktical model. (might chop the grip on the Tac model for better CC)

Is a gun chambered in 40 cal a versital item for use in IDPA type competitions or should I stick witht he 9mm round?

I know I can change out the 40 cal barrel to a .357 sig but can I change the barrel and spring and shoot 9mm in the same gun?

How would this work of IDPA shooting?

New to all of this and still learning.

Thanks

The XD is an excellent choice for a combination carry/IDPA gun. Cutting the grip down may make it illegal for IDPA. The 40 cal is a good choice but, 9mm is a lot cheaper to shoot and there are just as many good SD loads for the 9 as the 40.

Thanks for the info.

So if you were buying a 9mm XD that would do double duty as a IDPA and your daily carry firearm which one would you buy and why?

Sub Compact, Compact, Service, Tactical?

Thanks

Just my opinion, but since you asked......

I own both the 4"service model and the 5" tactical, both in 9mm. I bought the tac model to use as an IDPA gun and the service as a potential carry gun and for my son to use in IDPA matches.

If I were only limited to one, it would be the 4" service model. It's a little lighter than the tactical and slightly easier to conceal, especially if you are not a large person.

The sub-compact is much easier to conceal due to the shorter grip and barrel and reduced mag capacity, but probably is not the ideal gun if you plan to be a serious competitor. Others may disagree on this point.

In my opinion, the ideal multi-purpose XD9 would be the 4" service model with the shorter grip of the XD45 compact, but so far it only exists in my imagination. :frown5:

If I had to do it over again I would go with the service and sub-compact instead of the tactical as they would better suit my present needs since I am no longer active in IDPA, unfortunately.

Again, this is just my opinion. Take it for what it's worth.

Thanks for the opinion.
I handled the 4" XD today at the local gun mart.
Felt good.
Looked like it would conceal well on my 5'-8" 155lbs self.

Thanks again

I have the XD9 service model it serves very well in both the CC role and the IDPA role. The extra inch of barrel on the Tactical helps with sight radius and since I also carry a 5" 1911 at times I don't think the Tactical would be any more difficult to conceal.
