Front sight falls off after 300 rounds?

Post by FloMoAggie »

Hi everyone,

I recently had the stock sights on my Glock 19 replaced with Trijicon HD sights. The local shop that sold me the sights also installed them. I picked them up last Tuesday, and I put 150 rounds through the gun last Wednesday and another 150 rounds this afternoon. When I was cleaning the gun this evening, I noticed that the front sight was missing. I've looked everywhere, but I'm looking for the proverbial needle in the haystack.

I'm planning on calling the shop tomorrow to let them know what happened and ask that they replace the front sight and install it again at their expense. The only two possible reasons that this happened are that either 1) they were not installed correctly, or 2) the sight itself was somehow faulty (stripped out our something else in the mfg process).

Does my request of the gun shop seem reasonable?

I don't believe it is unreasonable at all. I've had numerous glocks all of which have had after market NS installed. I've never had an issue with any of them.

I use red loctite.

Your request is by no way unreasonable. Keep us updated.

I've emailed the owner and will follow up with a phone call tomorrow if I've not received a response. I'll be sure to let you know how it's handled by the shop.

Had the rear sight fall off a PPK.....old gun, factory installed sight that came on the gun. I was able to find it though, and put it back on with loctite.

More of a shocker....put an AR iron backup rear sight on a KSG --cheap Chinese version I had on hand. It broke just above the part that attaches it to the rail and flew back and hit me in the face. It was obvious from the break that the sight was cheap cast metal. It may have held up on an AR but couldn't take the recoil from 12ga slugs. Replaced the sights with Magpuls.

Your request is perfectly reasonable.

In a related story, I had the front sight on my Browning Hi-Power "disappear". I bought it used so I have no idea about round count. My daughter was shooting it and I noticed her rounds starting hitting high. I looked at the pistol and it had no front sight. We looked all over but never found it. I took it to the gunsmith at Gander Mountain and he sent it back to Browning. Even though I bought the pistol used, Browning replaced the front sight for no charge.

Good luck with yours. Please let us know the results.

Well, I received an email from the shop owner/manager that said "let me check with my gunsmith and see what we can do". Not exactly the response I was hoping for, but I'll give him a day or two to come back to me with a solution.

Still, I have to scratch my head at the thought of the owner having to check with the gunsmith? Oh well. It either gets handled properly or I'll know a gun shop that won't get any more of my money.

Well, I wish I could report that the shop had taken care of this as I had hoped, but that's not the case so far. After the initial response of "I'll check with my gunsmith and see what we can do", I followed up a couple of days later since I'd not heard back from them. At that point I was told that the gunsmith said he had installed the sight correctly (surprise - what else would he have said?) and that they were checking with Trijicon to see if there were any known issues that could have caused the sight to come off.

I explained that I had already reached out to Trijicon directly, but without a sight to inspect, they could only offer to sell me a replacement for $60 (dealer cost). The shop owner said he might have better luck through dealer services. That was on Monday. Nothing since then.

I've gone ahead and ordered a replacement from another vendor and have installed the replacement myself. It doesn't look the shop is going to do the right thing, and I didn't want my gun to be out of service any longer. Too bad I had to spend $165 (sights & installation) for nine days of a sight and then spend again on a replacement. I guess that's the cost of learning that I'll need to take my business elsewhere in the future. It's too bad. My Glock 19 is my first gun, but it sure won't be my last.

Or just plan on doing things yourself. It's more satisfying anyway, and usually cheaper (unless you have no idea what you're doing).

Where was this? I'd like to stay away from a shop like that myself.

A Glock sight pusher is ~$100. Not really economically feasible if you only have one gun.

You can just punch them out with a nylon punch. You don't need a $100 sight pusher.
