Just a quick update and question. The resto project is going well. Found about a 90%+ overall nice parkerized finish under all that black gunk. The stock I have cleaned up nicely and am reading to "treat". Here is the question.....it may seem rather silly, but I just thought if and was kinda.....Hmmm? I'm using Tom's 1/3 mix.....which is basically what is known as Finn mix if you arn't familiar with it....combo of turpentine, BLO, and beeswax. Do I put this in and treat the bedding channel as well as the outer surfaces of the stock or do you leave the channel bare wood? :???: Greg

If the bedding channel is bare wood, it will be a highway for moisture into the stock. Treat it with something.

That's what I was thinking. Thx. Oh.....and great looking finishes on yours. My stock after cleaning up looks about like the "before" pic of your carbine on here. Did you use any kind of stain to get it back the way it looks or just the products you described? I'll post some before/after pics of mine when I get the project done. Just a side note......I sure am kicking myself in the tail for not picking up some of the carbines back when they were a dime a dozen and one could hardly give them away! LOL. Remember those days? Everybody ditching them for Mini-14's. I've been buying up some extras of the things like cheap Mosins, Mausers, etc. on the market now for just that reason. :-) You have a happy Memorial Day! Think I'm takin the kiddo's to the shooting range then BBQ'in. Thx for the quick response!

BLO darkens the stock. I didn't use any stain. Yes, I remember the good old days, pre-68. I grew up in Sacramento. We had a surplus store that had Garands, Carbines, Mausers, Japanese and Italian guns in piles. 55 gal. barrels full of bayonets. By today's standards, they were all dirt cheap. Heck, now, just finding the real thing is a challenge!

For the stock interior, just slop it full of BLO until it can't hold any more.
