For the record, I was born and raised in Kilgore (home of "the World's Richest Acre", The KC Rangerettes, birth place of Van Cliburn, former stomping grounds of Lone Wolf Gonzales and other Texas Rangers in the boomtown years, etc). I tried three different times to move away from home, but always came back....this time 28 years and counting. I attended KJC in the early 70's, assistant managed the "demonstration farm" in the mid to late 70's, taught 5 semesters of CE241 (plane surveying) there in the 80's and have had several other business experiences with the college over the years. In the 70's the college was well rounded in it's offeriings. It was among the first to offer courses in oil and gas technology (starting in the 60's), as well as corosion technology, and while I was an "employee" the agriculture department was high on the list and the "farm" worked many joint projects with the Texas A&M Research Center in nearby Overton. When the long time president of the college retired in the late 70's, the farm budget was gutted as well as other technical programs. For the last 30 years, the term "liberal arts" has taken on a dual meaning.... both "liberal" and "arts". Other than the East Texas Police Academy and Firefighter Academy, KC's biggest thing is the "Shakespear Festival". The "arts" are the kind of stuff that Mr. Holda seems to hold dearest. He is probably no different than 90% of the rest of the "educated fools" that run (into the ground) other institutions of higher learning. That seems to be the nature of the beast. I have little doubt that he has been informed of his total ignorance on the subject, but in part due to his total liberal bent, and part due to sheer arrogance, I wouldn't expect to see a retraction of his ill-informed statements.
Y'all leave my hometown alone, ya hear

All to frequently "horse sense" does not accompany "book sense".

Have you guys seen Dr Hupp's response?
I'll post here since I didn't see anyone mention it
Bill Holda’s grievous misstatement of fact is not sitting well with at least one survivor of the Luby’s massacre. After watching her parents die in the attack, Dr. Suzanna Gratia Hupp became one of America’s leading advocates for the legalization of concealed carry. She testified before Congress and several state legislatures that she very well could have stopped the gunman had she not been required to leave her gun in her car.
Dr. Hupp, a former Texas State Representative and the author of From Luby’s to the Legislature, responded to Holda’s comments by stating, “I’m not sure which is more offensive, the apparent complete fabrication of Dr. Holda’s Luby’s Cafeteria story or the lack of journalistic effort by the reporter to correct his fictional tale.”
Addressing Bill Holda directly, Hupp added, “Dr. Holda, the only person who had a gun was the madman slaughtering those around me like fish in a barrel. I defy you to name one place in this country where a mass shooting has occurred despite the people there being allowed to carry concealed handguns for protection. These madmen go where they know they will get a high body count.”

Charles,
The news report cited in the article has a video that includes a taped on the phone statement from Dr. Holda about the Luby's event.

At about the 1:20 mark
I tried to download the flv in both realplayer, Internal Exploder and Firefox, and playing it, then going through the temporay internet files folder for the cached copy, but either I'm too tired or I'm just not gettin' it right, or I'm set to cache where no one looks and I forgot where.
Ketk might send a copy to you via e-mail or give you a link to download it.
(I probably shouldn't have addressed him as "Mr. Dufus" at http://sarahandmom.wordpress.com/2010/1 ... lthy-liar/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
since I generally respect authority, but sheesh) I'll apologize to him for any disrespect ... when he admits he is a dufus.

THAT ABSOLUTELY HAD TO BE DONE ON PURPOSE!!! There is no way that guy made those statements thinking there was a lick of truth to it. He saw a chance to use the media to sway those that will here that clip and never research it. In my opinion that was a purposely calculated malicious statement.

Oh, he's well aware that his statement was false. Here's my rebuttal to the canned response he's been sending to people who email him about the statement in question:

Thanks for all of the help folks. You'll be seeing the video in another setting soon.
Is Kilgore a state supported school, or a private entity? Never mind, it is a state supported school. (This keeps getting better!)

Can't swear to it, especially since I personally don't believe any institution getting "public $$$" should be called "private", but
I'd say Public

Kilgore College is a publicly supported, two-year, comprehensive community college offering postsecondary educational opportunities.
As defined by the Texas Legislature, the official service area of KC includes territory within the following school districts:[3] ...

Note: since this is a 2-year college, the assumption that the numbers of CHLs would be low, due to age might be correct, except that
many older job-displaced people "went back" to school, to make themselves more marketable for jobs now. (Not even considering the Staff at the University) So, we really aren't talking about a bunch of irresponsible 18 year olds at school (as if 18 year olds could even get a CHL)
I know ... preaching to the choir ... sorry
