If you run across some Winchester Q3131A1 (a specific code of their 5.56 55gr FMJ), grab some up. I have found it to be very accurate in my rifle. From what I've read, it's the standard Israeli 5.56 round.Aggie_engr wrote:Walmart has federal value pack ammo 55gr fmj brass. 100 rounds for $40. Best price for the quality of ammo around. I refrain from buying ammo at academy due to prices being higher than at other places where it's readily available.jcarp02 wrote:What do you recommend just for shooting around?![]()
If you ever get near Brenham, it's worth a stop at Ammunition To Go to make a bulk ammo purchase, sans shipping. I've been known to make the drive all the way out there from Austin just to pick up ammo (and perhaps stop at the creamery for a tour).

I've also found that the PMC Bronze .223 is quite good, and you can usually find it for something like $9/box.
The previously-mentioned federal bulk pack has worked well for me, though I haven't done any accuracy tests on it yet. Federal's brass is quite nice, if you're into reloading.
I personally stay away from steel-cased .223, but i have friends who run it.
And yeah, I don't buy .223 ammo from Academy. Selection is poor, and what they have is overpriced. They charge $3 more oer box for their Monarch than I pay at Cabela's for PMC.
