My wife and I are taking a two week trip to California to visit friends and family and take care of some family business. We'll be stopping in Santa Fe tonight and visiting my friend Sharon, whose husband John passed away just over a week ago. Then we're taking two days to get from Santa Fe to Pasadena, with detours along old Route 66 along the way.

I'm bringing my M&P 45 and my M&P 340, with suitable holsters and lock boxes for when we cross the Arizona/California border.

Wish us luck!
That's a long drive, I did it to SF about 6 years ago it was an 8-9 day trip with 6 of that spent driving, great scenery along the way though.

If you pass through Gaines County on your way back let me know and I'll try to meet up with you.

:iagree: I've driven from DFW to visit my parents in the San Francisco area several times. You could get it down to two days each way if you really wanted to, but IMO halfway through you'd probably be too tired to drive safely. It really is more of a two and a half to three day trip.

I checked it a long time ago. The full sized M&P45 with the thumb safety was on the "good" list. Just checked it again. Still good until February of 2012.

Anyway, posting from the Best Western Inn in Santa Fe. Those of you who saw my back condition at the Elm Fork Meetup will understand why I'm feeling pretty gimpy this morning. It's all good though. We're going to explore along Route 66 today and hole up for the night in Flagstaff, and then we'll make Pasadena tomorrow night.

I thought "the list" in Kalifornia only pertained to firearms that could be bought and sold in that state, not to what you as a non-resident could bring into the state and then take back with you when you leave? I know you can't bring in standard-capacity mags over 10 rounds, but the M&P 45 has a 10-round mag so should be compliant with that law.

You seem to be saying if a gun is not on Kalifornia's approved firearms sales list that a non-resident cannot even have such a gun in their possession, even if said gun doesn't violate other state laws (10-round mags, "assault" weapon, etc)?
I'm fairly certain you can't bring it in if its not on the list. The exceptions are if it is LEO purchased, then once in its fine. So you can have it but only if brought in through that exception. Just moved from kalifornia a year ago and have been fairly up on the laws.
You are incorrect, The Safe handgun Roster only applies to new gun purchases for residents of California(of course with LEO exemptions), any gun may be brought into the state as long as it is not an AW(an example would be a Taurus Judge), and the 10 round magazine law is followed. One of the ways "Off List" guns come into California is by new residents coming in from other States.

There is absolutely no law that states a resident cannot have an off list handgun.

I spend lots of time in the L.A. area and am currently here right now for a few weeks. I am well aware of California firearm laws, even have an AR of mine set up to comply with California laws.
Well ain't I a big ball of FUD....

I just re-read the rules on the DOJ website and sure enough you can import off list handguns as a "personal handgun importer". I was never saying, however, that you couldn't have them just that I thought you couldn't bring them in. I recall that people were foaming at the mouth on the CalCCW site when one of the LEO's wanted to sell his LCP. .22lr revolvers go for a pretty penny because there is only one model S&W on the list and it sells for $700+.

I'm enjoying my new home state and am still trying to shake off 36 years of looking over my shoulder for merely mentioning the word "gun". I am missing my home range at Angeles Crest though. Steel targets out to 700yds and the only restriction was no steel bullets.

Again, the "Safe List" has nothing to do with you and whatever gun you bring with you. It only applies to guns that non LEO(or others exempted) can purchase new from an FFL.

Be safe, amigo!!! You were definitely uncomfortable at the range on Saturday, so I imagine riding/driving for hours on end can be somewhat distressful. Stay in touch and keep us posted! Don't you just love the internet? Many miles away and still instantly in touch!!!!!

LONG drive from Grapevine, but Best of the West Range in Liberty Hill (northwest of Austin on Hwy 29, a few miles west of US 183) has 1,000 yard range with steel targets and very few restrictions.

You shoulda moved to Austin area like all the other Kalifornians

Spending all of 2009 living in the bay area was the final straw for me and Kali.

We arrived late Saturday afternoon. Had dinner with one of my best friends and his wife. Sunday morning at our old church with our old Sunday school class. Sunday afternoon family reunion. Didn't really get to rest until this morning (Monday), but I had a client meeting from four to seven thirty pm today.....

....maybe I'll get to relax when I get home to Texas.

Hope the rest of your trip goes well, TAM! I took a quick jaunt out to the Bay Area last weekend because my wife and I decided to have our baby baptized in the church where we grew up. Really loved the weather and enjoyed a couple of trips to In-N-Out but also realized that Texas was starting to feel more like home.
