Temporarily anyway.....

My wife and I are taking a two week trip to California to visit friends and family and take care of some family business. We'll be stopping in Santa Fe tonight and visiting my friend Sharon, whose husband John passed away just over a week ago. Then we're taking two days to get from Santa Fe to Pasadena, with detours along old Route 66 along the way.

I'm bringing my M&P 45 and my M&P 340, with suitable holsters and lock boxes for when we cross the Arizona/California border.

I thought "the list" in Kalifornia only pertained to firearms that could be bought and sold in that state, not to what you as a non-resident could bring into the state and then take back with you when you leave? I know you can't bring in standard-capacity mags over 10 rounds, but the M&P 45 has a 10-round mag so should be compliant with that law.

You seem to be saying if a gun is not on Kalifornia's approved firearms sales list that a non-resident cannot even have such a gun in their possession, even if said gun doesn't violate other state laws (10-round mags, "assault" weapon, etc)?

I'm fairly certain you can't bring it in if its not on the list. The exceptions are if it is LEO purchased, then once in its fine. So you can have it but only if brought in through that exception. Just moved from kalifornia a year ago and have been fairly up on the laws.

You are incorrect, The Safe handgun Roster only applies to new gun purchases for residents of California(of course with LEO exemptions), any gun may be brought into the state as long as it is not an AW(an example would be a Taurus Judge), and the 10 round magazine law is followed. One of the ways "Off List" guns come into California is by new residents coming in from other States.

There is absolutely no law that states a resident cannot have an off list handgun.

I spend lots of time in the L.A. area and am currently here right now for a few weeks. I am well aware of California firearm laws, even have an AR of mine set up to comply with California laws.

After reading this topic I realize that I have visited California many, many times with my guns and I never thought to change out my magazines to 10 rounds or less. Crazy, I always made sure they were unloaded and locked in the trunk but the magazine capacity never even entered my thinking.

So, despite trying really hard to make sure I was legal they have so many laws that I was actually breaking the law each time. I'm glad my Dad moved to Phoenix recently so I don't have to visit him in California anymore. No more disarming. =)
