I would hope that we, today, have that some amount of courage, endurance and fight in us, but I haven't met anyone to this date that, in my eyes, could hold a flame to the man that my great grandfather was, or any other man of that era. They are the greats for a reason. Not to offend anyone or say that our men and women serving now don't have the fight and courage to get the job done, but respectfully, this is a different fight than those men had in the 40's. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not to sure that I'd have what it takes to get trenchfoot and keep fighting for another year while eating whatever scraps could be gathered while praying for backup. But like many of them I'm sure I'd feel the sense of duty to try, much like i still wish I had joined when I had the chance.

I live my life in awe of those men and I spend a lot of time reading the stories that have been written down in the last decade. It's amazing to read stories of D-Day, from men in different units with different missions, and find parts of the stories where they saw the same thing, or their paths may have crossed, but likely never knew each other.

Really awesome site and pictures. Thanks to the OP for sharing. :tiphat:
You haven't had to meet someone that fills that same criteria yet, as the circumstances demanding it have not yet arisen in our lifetime.

As a culture we have a habit of looking at ourselves as somehow being different than all other cultures before us. Of course that is true, but only due to the passage of time. In reality we have had the same idiots leaning the opposite way of what we think is right, and the same desires and aspirations as our forefathers modified by the impact of science and technology for our era.

I have always loved Military history, particularly World War II. But I have always seen it as simply another chapter in the cycle of human history.
