World War II in photos

This is a very comprehensive collection of photos from The Atlantic.

"This series of entries will last from June 19 until October 30, 2011, running every Sunday morning for 20 weeks. In these photo essays, I hope to explore the events of the war, the people involved at the front and back home, and the effects the war had on everyday lives. The entries will follow a roughly chronological sequence, with some broader themes (such as "The Home Front") interspersed throughout."

I would hope that we, today, have that some amount of courage, endurance and fight in us, but I haven't met anyone to this date that, in my eyes, could hold a flame to the man that my great grandfather was, or any other man of that era. They are the greats for a reason. Not to offend anyone or say that our men and women serving now don't have the fight and courage to get the job done, but respectfully, this is a different fight than those men had in the 40's. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not to sure that I'd have what it takes to get trenchfoot and keep fighting for another year while eating whatever scraps could be gathered while praying for backup. But like many of them I'm sure I'd feel the sense of duty to try, much like i still wish I had joined when I had the chance.

I live my life in awe of those men and I spend a lot of time reading the stories that have been written down in the last decade. It's amazing to read stories of D-Day, from men in different units with different missions, and find parts of the stories where they saw the same thing, or their paths may have crossed, but likely never knew each other.

Now that is cool! What a great idea to give history a modern spin and make it come to life, when you can actually see the comparison in terrain, to see and know that you're looking at the real deal.

I have been collecting old photographs for a few years. None of mine are as good as in the link you provided. However, this is one of my favorites of the ones I have from World War II.
It appears to be from North Africa, I believe Charles De Gaul is in the center. I have watched way too much of the movie Patton, so in my mind, Monty is way off to the right. Omar Bradley is in the middle up front and Christopher George from the Rat Patrol is to the left of Charles.
