Is this where we're going, "thought crime"?
I wonder if she drew a picture of ET, would they search the house for illegal aliens?
Perhaps this is what you mean:

Thank you for this post.

My views on Canada and guns are pretty clear after I was subjected to an hour long search at the border when I drove to Canada from Texas.

I wasn't given an explanation for the unusual search, after all I was traveling with my wife and six year old son.

However after I was free to go, I shut my the trunk to my car and saw the Texas license plate.

I remembered the quote from "Hunt for Red October". "Buckaroo? Ah, the Captain seems to think you're some kind of... cowboy".

Next time your in the DVD department of you local store, notice the number of actors holding guns on the covers of the DVD's.
Guns must sell DVD's.
Maybe Canada should ban pictures of guns to avoid these false arrests.
Pictures of guns.... bad.

Still, I recognize the police desire to ensure safety for the family. While rare, sometimes fathers do evil things.
Once again, I understand that this incident took place in Canada...I certainly am thankful for the Constitution written by the Founding Fathers...despite how often it is abused, at least we have the Fourth Amendment to remind the authorities that we have a right to be secure in our persons, houses, papers or effects against unreasonable searches and seizures...I guess Canadians have no right to be secure in that manner...and I'm sure the internationalist crowd would love it for us to be that way as well...there is a way to do things and a way NOT to do things, and the way they did it was WRONG.

...back in the mid-80s, wife and I went to Niagra Falls...walked across the bridge 3 days in a row...friendly, talkative Canadian border guards visited with us about small talk...waved us through without even getting up from their desks...the fourth day, we said our "Hi's" and started through...they jumped up and tersely demanded IDs...I told them I didn't bring my wallet...my wife had the money...they haughtily told me I was mistaken if I thought I could cross an international border without proper ID...these were the same good ole boys who'd been so hospitable the three days prior...I realized what it was about and told them I don't make national policy...lighten up...one of them said very condescendingly, "Well, we might make an exception this time"...I said "don't bother, our money will spend just fine on the American side" and we walked right back to the good old USA...Reagan had just instituted the lumber tariffs and Canada was slightly unhappy...I haven't lost anything in Canada...or Mexico...the USA's fine for me...

...rifles and shotguns were brought to school uncased and stored in common coatlockers at the rear of the classroom till after school, when kids walked to a friends house with them, or boarded another school bus to a friends house to hunt...they didn't even check them to see if they were unloaded...they KNEW we'd been trained at home...sounds like another world, doesn't it?!!! I believe "Good Old Days" applies here...

...now, kids get sent home and counseling if they chew a piece of bread into a "gun" and say "bang" with it...
I made a really nice "tommy gun" and a "1911" out of boards as a kid (we were too poor for store-bought ones)...we played "Army" in the East Texas woods...kids would probably get "re-educated" after their parents got arrested if some kid did that these days...I don't have quite as many years notched up as some, but even I can see how bad things have gotten in that regard...

Sorry for the blandness of my original post. This did take place in Canada and since I have never lived there or had the desire to move there, I have not made myself privy to their firearm laws and law enforcement procedures. Thus, I cannot say whither the described procedure was the norm for that country or not.

I can however understand human motivations and emotions. I understand also that those emotions can be swayed by political, religious, ethnic, and educational persuasions with which a person has lived. I believe my original post took these points into consideration without an opinion from me which would have been so colored.

That said, I will venture further. I do not like the way this father and mother were treated over something so innocuous. I would like to think that such could not so easily happen in our country, yet I believe it can happen even here since people are involved.

Some people here talk of protecting "sheep" from the "wolves." Are children never the sheep and fathers never the wolves?

Officials told the newspaper the move was necessary to ensure there were no guns accessible by children in the family's home. They also said comments by Sansone's daughter, Neaveh, that the man holding the gun in the picture was her dad and "he uses it to shoot bad guys and monsters," was concerning.
I wonder if they also checked the closet for monsters? :banghead:

FWIW, that same law exists in Texas, today, and the report must be made to Child Protective Services - a report to your principal, or to the police, is not sufficient.

And yes, teachers ARE prosecuted for not following that law.

No link that I can provide.
Just copy and past into a notepad.txt or word.doc and send it to your bud.

Good grief! I was a weird kid to start with. Then Aurora came out with a series of movie monster models and I built them all. Then I drew them. Can you imagine that now? I'm scared for our country and our world.
