Thanks and I do have a CHL. When I received my CHL last year my instructor told us our
firearm could not be carried across state lines but needed to be locked away (just while crossing the state line) even if it was a reciprocity state. Is that correct?

...absolutely not...
speedsix is right. Either you misunderstood your instructor....which is certainly possible....or your instructor was stating an opinion rather than a fact. The whole point of reciprocity is that other states recognize your CHL as being valid within their borders. If it is valid within their borders, then why on earth would you lock up your gun when you can carry it instead?
Take a look at the link I posted in my previous post.

I travel to other states frequently and ALWAYS have my weapon on me when traveling. With the CHL and the states you are going to, you should be fine carrying concealed in the car or on your body. Just be sure to note where it is and isn't legal to carry (churches, restaurants that serve alcohol, etc.) in each state as they will differ state to state. Additionally, some states have laws on carrying only one gun, etc. Just follow the laws for each. Use
http://www.handgunlaw.us" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; as a good reference for each states rules.

Why would you even want to go to Iowa?
On top of the weird laws, it is several hundred extra miles.

Not if you are going up I-29 to eastern ND. At Omaha, you cross the Missouri to Council Bluffs IA and stay in IA until you reach Sioux City.
If you are leaving the eastern half of Texas (like Dallas), and going to eastern ND (like Fargo), then Iowa is in the route.
If you are leaving the western half of Texas (like Amarillo), and going to middle ND (like Bismarck), then Iowa is way out of route.
