I have family in law enforcement and it's interesting how often people assume every LEO is an expert on firearms just because they carry one for their job. In my experience, people often ask them questions about which firearms are best and value those opinions over that of non-LEO gun aficionados or even gunsmiths.

Many LEOs do take pride and invest the time to become experts in their firearms, but even these are often well versed in their preferred brand or caliber and not necessarily an encyclopedia on the general topic. A percentage of the LEO community is comprised of avid "gun nuts", and several of those folks participate in this very messageboard. At the same time, many LEOs get a firearm issued by their department and leave it holstered for their entire career except for an annual re-qualification test. (Caveat: all skill and knowledge levels are susceptible to a ND with a moment's lapse of concentration, this part of the exposition isn't directly related to the OP.)

I came up with an example that I think is fair: LEOs also use a car to perform their job, but very few people consult them for their opinions before buying a new sedan or SUV. Some LEOs might be true gear heads or auto enthusiasts; it would be appropriate to consult with them.

My point is that we should hesitate before automatically assuming any LEO is an "expert" in automobiles OR firearms just because they happen to use those tools in the execution of their jobs.

Back on topic: I echo condolences to the family and department of this officer. No matter how it happened, it's sad and unfortunate. May God bless them.
