You guys may be looking at this thing entirely wrong. Maybe she was looking to purchase. Maybe the "ok good" was misunderstood. Or maybe she has been looking and didn't want to seem desperate when she discovered it wasn't what she was looking for...

that's probably what I would have done...I'm awful like that.
same here...probably would have been a wise-aleck and said it was a "street sweeping uzi mac-10 assault rifle shotgun with a 300 round clip"

No, it's a ""street sweeping uzi mac-10 assault rifle shotgun with a 300 round clip and a shoulder thing that goes up."
...with a pistol grip.

Possibly - but the onus is not on us to psychoanalyze all of the possible permutations of a person's motives when they're acting in an aggressive manner - we can only deal with what is, not what might be.
Don't get me wrong, I would have told her to mind her own business. Just trying to find a positive twist to things during the holiday season.

"Do you see it assaulting anybody?"

"No"

"Well, there you go."

I usually just ask "Why do you ask that?" and see where they go from there.

I'm still stuck on the fact you patronized Carter's Country.

My buddy was looking for an A-Bolt. When the salesman at Academy told us how his Tikka rifles were THE preferred choice if big game hunters...and when I asked (already knowing) he replied that Benelli made the Tikka (Sako actually does) we went across the freeway.

Price was actually very good on the rifle, and the Zeiss scope was on sale too.....

I made a good purchase in the North Houston/Spring Carter's Country a few years ago. But, it was a used Smith and Wesson J-frame revolver in VERY nice condition and I didn't need to ask any questions really. I think some places are okay if you go into them with certain expectations (or lack thereof). Fry's Electronics is also one of those places, for me.

Yes! This. is what I would have said also. I lecture ignorant friends and family about the liberal application of the term assault rifle in modern vernacular as an attempt to stigmatize vs the actual definition pretty frequently. Usually they are stunned by the information if they don't have a heavy axe to grind already.
