Thanks!
It looks like it's still anybody's guess at this point. DPS could keep going with the online renewal process for instructors or go back to requiring renewal classes if they want. The new law eliminating renewal classes applies only to CHL holders, not CHL instructors, so DPS has a lot of administrative discretion.

As I already pointed out, you can do TCLOSE or the Security... but as for instruction, it is NRA OR a nationally recognized course of instruction. Though it gives an "or"...are you familiar with any other BESIDES NRA?

There are a lot of 'other' schools, but that has an additional requirement - you have to regularly be teaching handgun classes too. The NRA training is stand alone - you do not have to teach any NRA classes (or non-NRA classes for that matter.)
It would be up to DPS to accept/reject any 'other' schools. I suspect they would be lenient/accomodating.

I just pointed out that we used to qualify (yes all instructors) every 2 years. 4 years back, they said we would skip the instructor renewals in Austin, do it online, every other time. It's time to go to Austin.
Apparently, they can do what they want. After all, they ignored the NRA trained requirement for 18 years. :)
They could have had half of us go to Austin 2 years ago to set up alternating groups, but they did not.
They could have had us qualify with other instructors, but they did not.
I am not aware of any instructors that have been required to qualify with another instructor. I pray they do not require that. I would rather go to Florence for a day!
There are a few instructors like Crossfire, Charles, Longtooth, etc. I would trust, but a large number of instructors would take any opportunity to reduce or remove competition.
As others have said my ability to shoot has no bearing on my ability to teach. I proved it once, shouldn't need to do it again.

I doubt that. If, and that's a big if, an instructor took your re-qual as an opportunity to flunk you, reduce the competition, you could always go to someone else. You'd have three chances. If you feel the instructor is unfair, I'd take my second and third chances w/different instructors. Complain to DPS. In fact, if that was a problem, you could request shooting for DPS at their range. I suspect DPS would take a dim view of overly strict instructors.
Maybe I have led a sheltered existence. I can't think of any instructors that I would not trust to renew with. In fact, I suspect the problem would be more of too lenient. You sign me off, I'll sign you off. :)
The local ranges probably want to see you succeed. More instructors, more business for the range.
How would they decide which half to require and which get a pass. IIRC, the last lege session was pretty non-eventful. Probably did not need to train us. There is a lot to cover this session.

I expect they were waiting to see if the lege would change the goalposts before they did anything.

I really do not think there are very many Instructors that would short another instructor to reduce the number. If you actively teach you should know many that would be fair. I don't even see another instructor charging an instructor for witnessing proficiency. I may be naïve, since I just took the class a week ago. But that is how I would handle it.

Appreciate the vote of confidence! Just, as an aside, we HAVE had the opportunity to qualify 2 other instructors. They somehow missed the deadline for renewal in Dec, 2011, so DPS then required them to shoot with another instructor to renew.
And no, we did not charge them anything. Even let one of them use our revolver.
