When I was growing up at that age I had access to all of my and my Dad's guns. However, I never felt I needed to take one to school to shoot anyone or anywhere else to shoot anyone for that matter.

I will be willing to bet the kid was depressed and maybe even was being bullied by the ones he shot. Many times the parents have no clue that the kid is having problems at school or feels suicidal as teens are notorious for not speaking to their parents.

For the reason you indicated and it was a fact reported that the shooting was due to the shooter being picked on, called names, made fun of, etc...
For said reason, if you have kids at home, all firearms are locked up in safe, any safe with biometric, quick-access, etc. All firearms are in the safe, and EDC from the hip to the safe, all the time.

or just not be a failure as a parent.. That works very well as well. (note successful parenting includes admitting your child has issues, and taking steps to get them help, as well as secure your firearms just as Beiruty suggested above while working though the child's issues, or getting him out of the home)

Securing firearms does not absolve the parent from the parenting duties. Otherwise, the kid would commit suicide somehow. A sad outcome for the parents who would like live like singles.
