My thinking is, if they did it because of the stickers, why is the areas with the stickers the only areas without paint?

Yeah that was my line of thinking also. I think this was done for reason(s) besides political ideology. It's all conjecture without more info.

I'm not easily intimidated, but I have zero bumper stickers plastered on my vehicles.

Why?

No one (except your loved ones and friends) cares about my political/religious/favorite sports team, but some nut may be offended and cracked enough to vandalize my vehicle because I don't stand guard 24 hrs a day...
