One other thing that I do not think I saw mentioned here...the bad guy has your wallet, presumably with your ID...this person now knows where you live...and if your CHL was in there, he knows you have at least one gun...and that you probably won't use it...ie - now he knows where to go "gun-shopping." :tiphat:

I think I've told this story before on this forum but I can't remember. It's a real-life story sort of related to the OP.

My car was parked outside the Sear's store at Irving Mall after being serviced sometime during the late-1990's. When I went to pick it up, there were several police cars around the general area. I quickly learned that an older gentleman was walking from the mall to his van and was robbed at gunpoint of his wallet, watch and ring by a young man, (turns out it was probably just his index finger pointing in a jacket pocket). As the robber fled, the older man reached in his van, produced a shotgun and pumped a few rounds into the perp's backside. This is where my involvement began because my car was peppered in the process.

The robber was found about a mile away on the side of the road. He apparently could ride his bicycle no further due to the blood loss or shock. (I never found out if he died from the wounds or not. I did find out he had just escaped from a prison in Oklahoma). The police gave me a detective's phone number and I left. When I called the detective a few days later I was told that I could take my car to a body shop for an estimate as the older gentleman agreed to pay for any damages he caused out of his pocket. I asked the detective to just give the guy my phone number and ask him to call me. When he did I found out that Irving police had taken him to "headquarters" after the incident and harangued him mercilessly about his actions. They said he should have let the perp go since he was leaving anyway! After several hours of this he was released as there was nothing to book him on. He asked what the damage was to my car and had I gotten an estimate yet. I told him I could only find a couple dents with chipped paint and would take care of them myself. The main reason I wanted to talk to him was to tell him good job for not rolling over and just being a victim.

I talked to him one more time months later and he said if he had to do it all over again, he would not have taken the shots. He said the money he had shelled out was substantial - car repairs for the other vehicles that were damaged added to the starting costs of a civil trial, (the robber and/or his family decided to attempt to rob him again through the court system). Definitely something to think about when your property is fleeing away from you, before pulling the trigger.

Say you let the robber get away with your wallet and now he has your address. What if one day he decides to show up armed with a gun and some friends and takes more? What if that day you're not home but the rest of your family is? That was my main concern about being mugged, which is why I have a throw away wallet.

There are no easy answers for scenarios like these. In the case I wrote about, the law has since been changed to provide for some protection against civil suits. There may still be the property damage to worry about, but that was a shotgun. The handiest weapon any of us would have available is more than likely a handgun.

I really like your idea of a throw-away wallet. That would certainly take care of the worries you wrote about.

:iagree: There are no easy answers and the choice will be made in a split second. I was going to mention that we did not have the Castle Law back then, but you covered that.

I have considered a throw away wallet in the past and have reconsidered it again after my renewal class this past weekend. I don't keep my wallet in the normal place, back pocket, so that would be a good place for the throw away.
