Stuck case in resizing die

Post by dukalmighty »

Ah durnit I stuck a case in my 223 die and by the time i decided to look fer a easy to get it out online i had tore it up so bad the fix wouldn't work, they suggest you drill and tap the primer pocket then using an oversize nut or socket that fits over the case against the die you put the bolt thru a washer and then turn it into the threaded primer pocket sucking the case out.But by the time i read it the case had no primer pocket or anything else left to drill and tap :banghead: .Thank god i can buy a lee replacement fer $13.00

Sorry about your misfortune. :cryin

Is the head of the case completely off? If it is, try soaking the die in a good penetrating oil overnight and use an easy out to try to dislodge the stuck case. You have nothing to lose at this point. Like you said you can buy a new Lee die for a few bucks.

Now, repeat after me: Resizing lube is our friend, Resizing lube is our friend, Resizing . . . ;-)

I believe you can send that die to Lee and have them remove whats left of the brass. Then you will have a spare for when that happens again ;-)

Have a shell extractor? Not sure about the .223 die, but the pistol dies allow you to remove the deprimer and slide a punch into the die to tap it out.

thanks fer the help lol,I resized it once and was having chambering problems with it in a rifle so i thought i'd remove deprimer and just kinda resize neck to see if that was the problem. So then i got a "hot" shell stuck,so i gently drilled a small hole in side of case with die in vise with business end pointed at about 2 feet of wood and after drilling hole soaked powder and primer with wd40,then continued with my escapade and 30 miutes later ordred new dies lol.And some other components i been waiing on til i had a list to save on shipping and so now i'm getting everything next monday,I need to call midway wed if they haven't shipped and order a check die fer .223 that way no frther brain implosions. :grumble

Look in your catalogs for a case removal tool kit. It s a small inexpensive kit that includes a drill bit, thread tap, spacer, threaded bolt, Allen wrench.
You drill out the primer pocket, tap the hole, set the spacer over the hole and then screw in the threaded bolt, using the Allen wrench you tighten down on the bolt until the case comes out. Very simple.
Most all the mail order reloading supply places sell one.

If you haven't already, take the die apart. You'll have to drive the expander ball out through the remains of the case. Of course, if there's any casehead left, that will either fix your problem or knock the rest of the head off right there. After that, you might be able to find a rod or something similar to tap the hull out from the top, or get a broken shell extractor, soak the die body in oil overnight and put it back in the press, put the shell extractor in the shellholder, raise the ram to engage its prongs on the casemouth, and yank that critter out.

I noticed that http://www.keepshooting.com/firearmacce ... ell223.htm has a similar extractor for $4.99, has anybody tried theirs for this operation? This is a lot tougher than pulling one out of a tight chamber, but if it will take the strain, that's a really good price.

fix for Sticky cases in resizing die

Post by titan_two »

I had the same problem resizing .223 in my hornady FL resizer. Never had problem with .243 before, either. In any case (so to speak) the answer for me was sizing wax. I had used Dillon spray on lube, hornady one shot, and rcbs spray on, but the best prevention for a stuck case is either the imperial or Hornady resizing wax (they might be the same, rebranded?)

both are sold by Midway and both have rave reviews. You swipe your finger tips across the wax and as you handle your brass, it gets lubed. I touch the case mouth in the wax too, if the decapping pin expander feels sticky. (or you can stand your cases up in a reloading tray and spray lightly into the mouths)

The prices are:
Imperial - 6.49 for 2 ozs (on sale)
Hornady - 4.09 for 4 ozs

If the head is truly gone, you can sometimes get the point of a scribe ('o-ring tool' at some parts places) between the brass and the wall of the die. If you're careful you can then fold the wall of the brass in without scratching the die, releasing the grip between the brass and die.

I have also heard of guys heating the die in the oven until uniformly hot and then dripping water inside the brass to try and get enough shrinkage to break it loose, but I can't recommend this unless you are really brave.

If you soak it in penetrating oil for a few days you might get lucky there too.

Whatcha got to lose at this point?
