Taurus 1911b - opinions?

Post by LedJedi »

I noticed this on the Taurus page and would like to solicit opinions on the features/design as opposed to other models. I've been thinking about getting a 1911 at some point and a Taurus model would be ideal for me as i'm a huge fan of Taurus in general. I just want to make sure it's got all the bells and whistles of other 1911 models and I know little about them at this point.

The only downside of the Taurus PT1911 (from what I've read) is that alot, if not most, of the internal parts are MIM. I had been waiting on getting one when they came out in stainless (I hear they are finally out) but now am having second thoughts. For the price, there are alot of added "extras".

Hey Led, I own a blued and a stainless model. Don't worry about the MIM parts, Kimber and others also use them. I have over 2000 rds through the blued model and just 225 through the SS model. I have had only one issue, the ambi-safety on the blued model was loose. Pressed it in and have had no other issues. Great value, check out pricing at Bud's. Both models can be had for far less than MSRP. Best of luck on your quest.

When I still lived in Denver a member of a gun club I belonged to had purchased one.

The thing that stood out as the "worst" was the HEAVY trigger so you'll need a trigger job to add to the price tag of a new Taurus vs. finding someone selling a used Springer or Kimber that may either have had a trigger job or not need one.

I don't claim to know anything about MIM but I know trigger feel. I've felt very sweet 1911 triggers and I've felt the Taurus and even a Rock Island Mil Spec felt better than the Taurus trigger.

I've got one, NO complaints. As a matter of fact, it shoots so good I have quit carrying my XD and exclusivly carry my Taurus. Shoots straiter than the road to hades and makes a hole twice as broad. No really, you can't go wrong. It's a good quality pistola. Purty, too. :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :fire :fire

I've bought three. My best friend talked me out of one,so I'm down to two.

All had excellent triggers, breaking at about 4 1/2#.

It's the best value 1911 on the market.

I bought all of mine over a year ago, so they are the basic 1911. You also now have choices of blue with laser grips, blue with night sites, or stainless.

I see the basic blue going for $460-$480 at shows with the laser or night site models going for mid $500's. The only stainless I've seen was marked about $650.

I also have two Springfields and one Kimber, but the Taurus gets the most use, by far.

Frankly, I'm curious why this process of forming small parts gets such a bad rap.

Interesting. I didn't know what it meant regarding firearms either.

On musical instrument forums, MIM means Made In Mexico.
MIA = Made In America.
MIJ = Made In Japan.
These abreviations are commonly used to describe Fender guitars and basses, which are manufactured in each of those three countries. "Jap Strat," used to describe a Stratocaster made in Japan seems offensive to many, but "MIJ Strat" is acceptable. "Mexi-Strat" doesn't seem to get under people's skin quite as much, but "MIM Strat" is still prefered.

A buddy of mine picked up a blued one about a month ago and we have put several hundred rounds thru it with no problems at all. For the money you can't beat it, best off the shelf 1911 value out there. There is one definately on my short list.

MIM generally gets a bad rap because, when the process was first used in firearms parts, there were some quality control issues, and the metal had some voids (air pockets) in it, significantly weakening the parts. That has largely been taken care of these days, but some folks still don't like MIM.

I do not own a PT1911, but I have looked them over a few times at gun shops. My opinion seems to match what I "hear" most often on the 'net. The finish on the "blue" model is cheap and I don't think would last long under even moderate use. I don't like locks built into guns, especially on critical parts (like the hammer which is where the lock is on the PT1911). I have heard many good things about the Taurus 1911's, though, too. Other than my cosmetic/philosophical "complaints," the PT1911's seem like good guns. I was thinking about getting the stainless version when it came out (to alleviate the finish concern), but I lost my patience and picked up a parkerized Rock Island Armory 5" Tactical model.

I just bought one about 3 weeks ago for my son to shoot, but it is the "AR" version with the accessory rail. I don't know if it is the pistol or the shooter, but my son consistently wears out the bullseye with that pistol. It shoots very well. My only complaint is that the ambi safety shot loose after the first range trip. We didn't even notice it until we were cleaning the pistols and saw that the safety had backed out a little bit on the right side of the frame and was rubbing on the inside of the grip panel a little. I showed it to my gunsmith, and he gave me a plastic dowel and a mallet, and I tapped it back into place. It hasn't come loose since.

Other than that, it seems like a pretty nicely made pistol... ...not fancy, but good. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a 5" 1911. I paid $629.95 NIB at Euless Guns and Ammo. I don't think you'll have to pay anywhere near MSRP for one.
