Angelina Jolie on guns

Post by texasgirl »

I have to admit I was surprised.

http://entertainment.msn.com/movies/hot ... ?GT1=BUZZ2

"If anybody comes into my home and tries to hurt my kids, I've no problem shooting them." That's Angelina Jolie, revealing her up-with-the-Second-Amendment maternal instincts to Britain's Mail on Sunday.

And, as an added warning, the protective mom of Maddox, 6, Pax, 4, Zahara, 3, Shiloh, 2, and the still-baking, Brad Pitt-spawned double buns in her oven, points out that she "bought original, real guns of the type we used in 'Tomb Raider' for security."

"Brad and I are not against having a gun in the house, and we do have one," acknowledges Jolie, who is out stumping for the soon-to-be-released thriller, "Wanted," in which she plays a weapons-wielding assassin. "And yes, I'd be able to use it if I had to. I could handle myself. I think there are certain combat skills that would come out. I tend to want to throw an elbow."

Says the goodwill-promoting earth mother, "There's a side to me that people know is humanitarian, and there's a side to me that's a mommy. But there's also the side that likes to get down and dirty and run and jump around and fire guns."

And while it'll probably be several years before any of her tots see her popping a cap or 50 in "Wanted," she's not going to shield them from violence on the big screen.

"It's just not a reality in this day and age to say, 'I'm never going to let my kids watch a movie that has a gun in it,'" explains Angelina. "It's important to know that this exists. But I'm very clear with my children about who's a good guy and who's bad."

Now if we can get her to rub off on the rest of Hollywood.

Most actors who have fired guns for movies like them, at least in a sporting/target shooting sense. However, they're also mouthpieces for public causes including crime prevention. Being a celebrity means walking a very fine line in public and I don't envy guys who have cameras stuck in their faces wherever they go.

I'm glad she thinks that the 2nd Amendment protects her RKBA, but does she also think that it protects yours and mine? My experience of living most of my life in California, and my experience with having hobnobbed with a number of Hollywood celebrities over the years (family connections), is that most of them seem to believe that their privileged status entitles them to rights which they do not think extend to the rest of us - a blatant example being Rosie O'Donnell's hiring of armed guards for personal security, while at the same time taking an activist position in favor of gun control for the rest of us.

The problem with many of the liberal celebrities I've met is that they tend to blur the line between rights and privileges, and they don't understand the difference between one and the other. They recognize that their celebrity affords them many privileges that are not afforded the rest of us, but they tend to view those privileges as rights. Their celebrity also buys them a certain level of access not available to the rest of us - Diane Feinstein's concealed carry permit comes to mind - and they see that exactly for what it is, not realizing that it is the Constitution which protects their right to gun ownership, not their level of access. Since a corollary of special inclusion is that it excludes all others, it is natural for them to think that their celebrity and wealth is what gives them the right to own and/or carry a firearm (or to hire those than can), just as it is equally natural for them to think that this purchased right is not available to those who are excluded from special access to privilege.

Like I said, I'm glad that Angelina Jolie is outspoken about her own RKBA, but until I hear her speak out in defense of yours and mine as an individual right, I don't trust her.

I guess I'm just an old curmudgeon...

Good point Annoyed. I hadn't thought of that. I guess we can hope for the best on that but not be surprised if she thinks it should only apply to some.

I tend toward the same distrust of celebrities who are too often quite hypocritical on such matters, but the following quote...

"But there's also the side that likes to get down and dirty and run and jump around and fire guns."

...makes me want to give Jolie at least some benefit of the doubt here. This makes her sound like she might actually be at least something of an enthusiast, which would set her far apart from the likes of Rosie...or for that matter, phonies like Mark Wahlberg who make good livings glorifying shoot-em-up tough guys on the big screen, all the while smugly and sanctimoneously bad-mouthing honest pro-2A activists like Charleton Heston.

This looks like it might be the interview the above stuff came out of

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/moslive/arti ... elina.html

I found this quote interesting
'I think it's good for anybody to learn a skill when it comes to fight training – be it kung fu, boxing or kick-boxing – because self-defence is important. Brad and I want our kids to learn it. They're going to get into a fight some day, so they might as well learn how to take care of themselves.

:iagree: Making a stand against the Hollywood traditional anti-gun stance indicates to me that she wouldn't limit RKBA to herself.

Angelina has always been known as a Hollywood libertarian -- that is, not a libertarian in the strict sense of the word, but a strong believer in individual liberty. Although they've been estranged for many years, she seems to have inherited some of her father Jon Voight's conservative politics.

Her weakness is a willingness to use government for humanitarian purposes, and her mistaken belief that the UN is just a big international charity.

She needs to prove this point, before I give her the "Charlton Heston/Tom Selleck/Ted Nugent, Celebrity Champion of the Right to Keep and Bear Arms" award...

I would give her kudos for this level of support though...

I think we should extend an invite to her and her posse to the next PSC day though...Imagine the turnout!!!

I think it's better that she likes guns a little than completely hates them, plus she's hot and I could never be mad at her!

Her comments (if anyone sees actually sees them) might be more influentual than the known diehards. It isn't us diehards that we need to convince, its the folks that haven't really thought out or understood the issues that we need to pull to our side young ladys in particular. When she speaks young folks, particulary the young ladys, tend to listen. They read this stuff in the magazines and eat it all up. her comments potentially could have more of an effect to winning folks to our side than Hestons "Cold Fingers" speach. Hopefully some young folks read her comments and figured out that protecting themselves and their children is a good thing. That it is good for a Mom to want to protect their children and a handgun is one way of doing it.
