If PETA had its way, animals would have more rights than humans...
oh wait, already there.

I love animals too.
I love them on my plate, right next to the potatoes and gravy.
Seriously, there are few animals more destructive to wildlife than a feral hog.

What a crock. I'd like to call the Stones myself and let them know they have my support and not everyone is a bleeding heart tree hugging idiot.
A pig like that can masacre a dozen cattle in one evening or lay waste to acres of crops. It needed to die by whatever means were at hand.

[sarcasm]Wow, 800 signatures from all over the world??? Why that's [quick math]about 0.001% of the world's population[/quick math]. Such a large outcry certainly means that the world is united in it's disdain for this boy.[/sarcasm]
Seriously, there's about 4 times more people registered on this forum, and I'm willing to bet we could get at least 800 signatures to cancel out the stupids. For goodness sake, the OC petition has has how many signatures now???
edit: Oops, missed a couple zeros. That's what rushing get's me.
It's actually more like 0.0000001%.

Re: Alabama boy getting flack over killing "Monster Pig"
This story is a little over a year old. Kid killed a big hog, but it wasn't a feral hog. It was a tame hog that the owner of the property had bought to be hunted. I don't care if he shot the hog as long as they ate it, otherwise, it was a waste of time and meat.

He said that the good news is your claims about the pig's massive size have been verified. The bad news is that he came from a hog breeder and that the pig had been sold from the breeder to the preserve for the purpose of hunting.

Re: Alabama boy getting flack over killing "Monster Pig"
Perhaps a larger bore could have been used on the boar???? Sorry, I couldn't resist.it took three hours for the “monster pig” to die after the animal was shot 12 times with a pistol.
But seriously folks. Why don't those self serving "modorator edit post here" animal lovers go down to Mexico or Spain and watch a plain old fashioned bull fight and then come back with some perspective.
Plus, it was a rather youngun that took the animal. That may translate into inexperienced shooter trying to bring down a HOUSE with a pistol.
I guarantee you that I've made some kooky shots deer hunting that I"m not proud of. The result is a wounded animal that I had to then run down and dispatch with a couple more shots. And at that point, the animal is moving and a clean kill shot is much harder to get.
It's unfortunate, but does happen to the best of us.

A hoax????? Well, I still mean what I said. Everything but the House part.

Re: Alabama boy getting flack over killing "Monster Pig"
Not necessarily a hoax. From the Monsterpig.com site:
An issue had been made about it being a domestic animal. But further in the article, it states that it is not legal to trade in wild animals so buying domestics is the only way to replenish a preserve.Get The Truth, It Was Not The Family Pet
The news media used it for headlines for a week claiming it's size was a hoax. On the evening of May 31, I was contacted by Bran Strickland of the Anniston Star and he told me that he had good news and bad news. He said that the good news is your claims about the pig's massive size have been verified. The bad news is that he came from a hog breeder and that the pig had been sold from the breeder to the preserve for the purpose of hunting.

Looking at the photos from the link provided by drw, it's pretty obvious that the size of the hog was GREATLY exaggerated. It was a big pig, but it was not nearly as big as they attempted to portray.

Jeez, these pictures are getting to be rediculous. In order to make the pig look bigger, the boy is what looks to be about 10-15 feet behind the pig. The perspective attempts to make it look like he is leaning right on top of it, but that isn't the case. In my opinion, the dad (who I presumed took the picture) went too overboard, and made the boy look too small, and thus the picture isn't believable. This trick is used plenty of times. Fisherman especially use the trick, but thrusting their fish forward at arms length, to get the fish closer to the camera and away from their body, to make the fish look bigger than it is. It's all about perspective.

It's also about depth of field. Notice how the boy is in sharp focus, while the pig is blurry. If the boy were right behind the pig, both objects would in sharp focus. The trees in the background are blurry. Camera lenses don't work that way.BigBlueDodge wrote:It's all about perspective.

Not exactly true. It's a function of the aperture (opening) to determine depth of field. At f1.8, you can take a portrait of a person, the tip of their nose will be in sharp focus, but their ears will begin to blur.WildBill wrote:It's also about depth of field.
