Hard to believe, but 51% currently say yes to removing "In God We Trust" from our currency.

450,714 votes counting mine for NOT removing it.

I did my part.

Edit: - I don't agree with this wording though: "No. The motto has historical and patriotic significance and does nothing to establish a state religion."

I truly trust in God without historical or patriotic significance.

I trust everyone knows the history of the phrase, and that it wasn't even an official motto until 1956. Just like "under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954, this was a response to hysteria about the "Godless communists". I sometimes think our nation was more afraid of atheism than of a brutal totalitarian dictatorship.

Speaking of the pledge, I also hope people know it was written by a socialist who hoped to tamp down notions of state sovereignty in the aftermath of the Civil War. Until the 1940s, it wasn't recited with hand over heart, it was recited with what we now know as the "Nazi salute" (the Nazis were also socialists).

It's odd how short our institutional memory can be.

Yeppers. People frequently want to keep the "under God" in the pledge because they dont want to change it in order to appease the atheists. Odd that they dont mind the fact that it was changed just 50 years ago in order to suit the Christians. Honestly, most dont even know that fact so I cant say they dont mind it. =)

Hard to believe, but 51% currently say yes to removing "In God We Trust" from our currency.

I believe the poll says that 51% say NO (not yes) to removal of the words.

That is what it was early this morning when I voted, and when I checked again a few moments ago.

Also, IMO "how long" (or for what intended purposes) it/they were added is not central to the importance of those words to at least two generations.

Is it something we really need to mess with?

Nope! I watched it swing from 51-49 to 50-50 to today's 49-51.

When I posted 51% said YES.

I don't believe it was ever the intent of our forefathers to separate Church and state. I believe it was only their intent to prevent a state mandated religion.

Well, keep watching it then...because it must be swinging. This morning, and just a few minutes ago 10:00 pm it was still 51% vote to keep the motto.

Here is the "cut and paste" of it:
Should the motto "In God We Trust" be removed from U.S. currency? * 703153 responses

Yes. It's a violation of the principle of separation of church and state.
49%

No. The motto has historical and patriotic significance and does nothing to establish a state religion.

Afraid not.

The rings were designed in 1913 by Pierre de Coubertin. The torch has been lit since 1928 (before the Nazis), but the torch relay did start with the 1936 games.

A bunch of atheist websites have linked to this poll, thus I believe the numbers are skewed and don't reflect the views accurately of Americans at large.

Having said that, I agree with KBCraig 100%. Check this article out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pledge_of_Allegiance
An early version of the salute...began with the right hand outstretched, palm facing downward. However, during World War II the outstretched arm became identified with Nazism and Fascism, and the custom was changed: today the Pledge is said from beginning to end with the right hand over the heart.

You dont think "a bunch" of religious websites have linked to it as well? Each group has a stake in this poll (despite the polls worth as exactly nothing) so they are both working on getting their opinion to be the winner.

They may have, and it's presumptuous to think that I was implying that they weren't. I don't read many Christian websites but I do read a few atheist websites and so therefore I had knowledge of this.
