Re: Woman shot in leg by stove
There are several possibilities beyond a shotgun shell, and I wonder if maybe, just maybe, one of those might not be true.
Whan I was a firemen, decades ago, cast iron wood burning stoves were becoming very popular, and people were misusing them to an alarming degree.
If you heat cast iron up too fast, it will stratify, that is the heat will not distribute evenly throughout the metal but will have hot spots and cold spots based on the unequal distribution of convection and conduction of the heat. This uneven distribution and expansion has been known to cause the metal to "pop" off fragments, and even to disassemble itself catastrophically. It could be that the hot stove merely shed a fragment that struck her and there was no shotshell at all.

We need to do something to get those evil .50 caliber fully automatic cop-killer assault stoves off our streets!

I bought a new cast iron pot bellied stove and the instructions advised of a break in period because possible air pockets exploding or the casting cracking, etc. Not sure of what a shot gun shell would do in a fire.........and not volunteering.

Stove Laws Now!
We need to have some reasonable stove laws now so that we can protect morons from hurting themselves. Sorry I didn't mean to be disrespectful of morons.

Re: Woman shot in leg by stove
Most people I know that starts a fire using newspaper usuall crumples the paper up before puting it in the stove. How could this lady not know there is a shotgun shell in the newspaper.. This is either not true or she is just a complete idiot.

Re: Woman shot in leg by stove
If I recall correctly, the article described it as a 22 guage shell. Allowing for their ignorance, I assumed it might be one of the old crimped nose .22 LR ratshot rounds. It would have been very easy to not notice one of those in crumpled up newspaper. It would also have been very easy to remove one of the tiny pieces of shot herself, as she apparently did.

Re: Woman shot in leg by stove
Without the compression of the barrel with the shell fired the velocity would diminish. A hot popped shell could send B.B.'s in you and could break skin but not much more than that. She could pull the lead out herself and that would be difficult if fired from a barrel. If a box of bullets dropped in my home everyone would be accounted for before normal life resumed. Imagine if one of those pellets hit her in the eye. Or her babies eye!
