IWB - How often do you clean it?
All, I notice that my carry piece seems to accumulate a lot of lint from being constantly carried IWB. How often do y'all clean your every day carry? I was thinking of getting some of those remoil wipes but that just seems like a waste of money. Any thoughts?

If you wipe your handgun down with the Remoil wipes, it will just attract dirt, lint, etc. Keep it dry. David G.

Don't roll around in lint?CodeJockey wrote:Any thoughts?

Seriously, I notice the same thing, primarily around my hammer between the hammer and slide because I carry a cocked and locked 1911. I just wipe it down with a clean dry lint free rag, and take a Q-tip to the collected lint around the hammer. My pistol gets stripped for cleaning often enough after range trips that a serious buildup of anything is just not an issue.
So if you make it a point to get to the range with some regularity and then clean your pistol after each range trip, you should be fine.

Canned air and a silicone cloth as needed.

I field strip and clean/de-lint my carry guns at least after 3-4 days of carry, but I do have different guns I carry for different "needs" so the same gun isn't carried every day. The guns I carry IWB get special attention though.

As needed. Mine will accumuliate lint as well, but will lint really induce a malfunction? Probably not. I just use a q-tip to clean it out, whenever I see it is looking gnarly. Plus, there are times that it needs to be cleaned daily, for example last weekend I was doing carpentry work, and it got full of sawdust and sand.
Re: IWB - How often do you clean it?
I get the lint, too. I was actually wondering if I was unique in the lint buildup.
I fieldstrip and clean her out every other week to keep her lint free, and clean her thoroughly after each visit to the range, which is once a month.
And yes, my gun is female. I figure if I take care of her then she'll take care of me, but if I neglect her she won't be there when I need her.

I also go to the range at least twice a month and strip and clean afterwards. In between times I use a lint free rag and wipe it down at night. I like to keep a can of compress air on hand for the lint around the hammer...I also carry a 1911 cocked & locked.

Lint makes pretty colors when it gets fired out the barrel...
The issue is that if you have lint or other debris in your gun, you are not practicing enough!

Well, I carry my Hi-Power OWB, but I've got cover garments, and it collects lint just like an IWB holster.
As for how often, once a week is the norm. Since it's only lint that has collected, I use CLP and Q-Tips (which reach into crevices where lint likes to collect) to do this.
I do the same for my LCP, which is pocket-carried.

Once a week...if it needs it or not...I also use one of those computer dust removers on the holster for the stuff that I can't see...

Re: IWB - How often do you clean it?
I carry a Kahr PM9 or a Glock 27, depending on my clothing that day. Inside the waist band on both and occasionally ankle holster with the Kahr PM9. I haven't had a problem with lint at all. Maybe because neither gun has places for it to accumulate. I only clean them after I fire them, which is about once every couple weeks. When I come in I take them out of the holster and put them in their respective hiding places.

Re: IWB - How often do you clean it?
Well, I do practice quite often; usually once per week. The thing is that I have 2 XD .40 sub-compacts. One is my carry piece and the other is my range gun. I do occasionally shoot my carry piece to make sure everything is still good, but I don't like to shoot my carry ammo because it is expensive (although I routinely shoot the ammo in the gun and spare magazine once per year to refresh it). I also don't like to unload / reload my carry ammo in my main gun because I want to avoid the possibility of a KB from re-chambering the rounds over and over.
Perhaps thats overly cautious on my part, but it gives me an excuse to have a spare gun!
The compressed air is a great idea. I don't know why I never thought of it. Thanks for everyone's input.
