Inexperienced shooter (me) OOOPS *updated*

Post by TexasComputerDude »

well I guess I need to pay more attention.

During the hurricane I bought what I thought was the last case of blazer .45 at walmart. Well it turns out I neglected to check that what I was buying was actually .45. It turns out it was 40SW and I didn't even notice a size difference when loading my 1911. I just accepted what the guy gave me cause I was in such a hurry to get everything done.

I ended up firing 2 rounds before I realized something was wrong with the ammunition and not my 1911. I did unload and use a pencil to check for squib loads or whatever they are called between failed shots just because I'm still inexperienced and wanted to not hurt myself. lol.

Well the rounds fired, but the casings expanded quite a bit inside my 1911. in fact they nearly exploded. they have cracks and are huge now. Even though they fired the slide wouldn't come back.

I hope it didn't damage my gun, I now have to look through all my .45 ammunition and make sure no 40's are in there. I keep them in the original box they came in but I've got at least 4 loaded clips floating around.

I only shoot .45's because I thought this was a way to avoid this problem. Oh well, from now on I check every single box I buy regardless of hurricanes or anything else going on and I RECHECK each round before I load them.

so after reading through my spiel, anyone want a free box of blazer 40sw? I'm in the corrigan/lufkin/nac area.

It's quite possible that you did. If I were you, I would have my gun checked by a gunsmith or sent back to the factory for a thorough inspection prior to firing it again.

BTW, many experienced shooters have done the same thing.

well I've been needing to get it fixed anyway. It doesn't shoot hollowpoints reliably and it stovepipes if you don't have a PERFECT grip.

It needs a good servicin lol.

Its one of the reason's my carry gun is a glock. It hasn't EVER jammed on me and i've been shooting it fairly regularly for about 7 months.

but I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have a couple nice new shiny 1911's.

I realized the other day that all my handguns are 9mm and thought maybe I needed to branch out some. Maybe it's a good thing to have all the same caliber!

When i was about 12 or 13 I slipped some 16 gauge shells in my 12 gauge. Didn't know at the time that 16's are black, 12's red or green and 20's are yellow. First shot at a squirrel jammed the semi-auto 12. I'm 46 now and still have the 16 gauge shells. Go figure. Never knew where they came from or how they ended up in my vest, but it was like a box of em. No one in the family ever had a 16 gauge shotgun. Anybody want some 16 gauge 6 shot?

I did this too, when I was new to pistols. I posted it in the past here:

NcongruNt wrote:I had that same thing happen when I was new to pistols, before my CHL. A friend of mine gave me his S&W 457S (.45 ACP) to try in anticipation of possibly purchasing it. I took it to the Red's in South Austin, and asked the guy for a box of .45 Auto. He handed it to me, I loaded up the mag, and took the first shot. It was quite inaccurate, and though the action cycled, it didn't quite feed right. I had no point of reference, having never fired a .45, so I thought perhaps it was a mag issue (I was already aware that it wasn't the best mag - my friend told me in advance that the slide lock tab on the follower was broken off). I took a look at the gun, it looked OK. so I chambered another round and fired again. Same result, except that I recovered the case this time, and it was swollen up like a pregnant chicken, similar to the picture above. I also pulled the target, and realized that the rounds were tumbling when they hit the target, all of 7 yards away. It hit me what had happened, and I looked at the casing, and sure enough - .40 S&W. The boxes were generic and not marked individually, so the only indicator was the stampings on the rounds themselves which were hard to see due to the poor lighting at Red's. I let the guy know that he had given me the wrong ammo, and he took the pistol over to the gun smith to look it over. The gun checked out, and he got me the correct ammo. I put 100 rounds through the gun, and decided it wasn't for me. That was also the most expensive practice ammo I've ever purchased... I believe it was something like $90 for the ammo and an hour of shooting ($13 by itself).

well good news regarding the 1911, I just test fired it and ITS WORKING FLAWLESSLY.

I had been having problems with stove piping and a few jams but after firing those 40sw though it it hasn't jammed since. I just got through putting 200 rounds through it in my pasture.

I don't know why it works or what fixed it but but I'm happy it works good now.

yall don't even understand this one was jamming with every second clip.

Sounds like an interesting way to break in a new 1911.

How many rounds had been through it prior to this event?? I think you may have just been at trailing edge of the break-in period. You will find many 1911's continue to have less and less problems with FTF as they 'settle in' with shooting over time. :fire

EDIT TO ADD: Also, if you totally stripped it down to inspect it after this incident, you probably gave it a good scrubbing and lubrication, and it was happier! ;-)

well hmm, well that makes sense.

I had been cleaning and lubing it pretty regularly (every few times I shot it) but didn't notice much of a difference. I guess the stars aligned while I was cleaning it this time lol.

I bought the gun used and maybe it was sold because they thought it was defective when it really hadn't reached the break in point.

a few pictures of the 1911 taken yesterday. (its not me, i don't need pictures, i was there):
