Blank Screen

Post by skip »

Everytime I fire up my laptop, I eventually get a blankscreen, sometimes if it comes up while I have another screen up and I can right click on the bottom tray and close, other times it comes up and takes up the entire screen not letting me pull the tray up, so I have to "control alt delete" to stop the thing, Any ideas? Other than that the laptop is working fine. This isnt happening on my desktop. Thanks

If you hit Alt-Tab, you should get a dialog box that shows which program you are in.

What you are describing could be a useless autoexec.bat file.

Unless he's running windows 95 I doubt the autoexec.bat file is in play.

Go to Start->Run, type "msconfig" hit Enter. There are a Services and Startup tab. You can audit that list to remove the offender. If you there's something you don't recognize a quick google search for program.exe will likely bring up an explanation of what it is.

1. Reboot your computer
2. hit F8 right after the BIOS screen and before you see "Windows XP"
3. it should bring up a list of start up options
4. start in Safe Mode
5. in Safe Mode, Start, Run, msconfig
6. in Services tab, check "Hide All Microsoft Services," disable all
7. in Startup tab, disable all
8. Reboot your computer
