.458 SOCOM

Well, I am in the middle of building an Ar-15 and I was planning on going with .223 upper again. However, after a little digging around I am starting to consider going with a .458 SOCOM upper from Rock river.

Some of the reasons why: I already have an AR-15 in .223, I like that you can use the same magazine/lower for both guns. It would be nice to have something a little more unique than just another .223 AR.

Some of the drawbacks: The rounds are much more expensive, rounds are also harder to find.

It should also be known that this guns' only purpose is going to be for my amusement. I don't plan on competing with it, or taking down any animal with it, its life will be spent in my hands shooting stuff.

Any input on this decision would be helpful, especially if you have any experience with this particular round.

I found .458 at Cheaper Than Dirt when I was there not too long ago, expensive round, but would probably be a hoot to shoot.

I really want one too, but unfortunately it just does not fit into the budget at this time.

For ammo keep and eye on Reed's as they sell out pretty quick.

If you do not reload yourself you could always send you spent brass to these guys and they will reload for you.

I just went big bore w/ the 50 beowulf and I love it. I'll probably only shoot 100-150 rounds a year through it so I try not freak out much about the ammo price. I in some ways wish I had gone 458 SOCOM since the ammo is easier to find.

I do reload, but atm only in .45. From what i have been reading at Teppojutsu.com, for the dillon progressive press it can be a little tricky, but Im up for a challenge.

You'll definitely want to reload for it.

"Handloaders" have a tremendous number of bullet weights and types to choose from. In fact, you can reload anything from 100 gr. bullets (at 3,000 fps) to 600 gr. subsonic rounds.

I will probably settle on 300-405 gr. rounds...since my main purpose is a dedicated "hog gun".

I am waiting on my custom upper right now (Marty built).
