AR .22 Conversions

Post by KFP »

I've been thinking about getting a conversion kit from CMMG to shoot .22 LR from my AR. Does anyone have any experience or feedback on these? Things that I should be taking into consideration?

It is good for most AR-15.
The barrel twist is not the best as it is too fast but it works well in 1 in 12 to 1 in 9 twist.
Ok in 1in 8 twist not as well in 1in 7 at any kind of range.
I have a dedicated upper for mine now but may pick up a drop in coversion again.

I have one from Brownells. I love it so much I bought another one.

Be sure to get the 27 round mag as you will get tired reloading the 10 round.

I bought extra 27 round mags so that I can shoot alot without having to reload.

Also, get a brass catcher, you will go through several hundred rounds per range trip.

Thanks for the replies!

I'll have to compare a few and see what is out there. Question on the dedicated upper - I'm assuming that I can use my current lower if I go that route, is that correct?

Yes my dedicated is a 5" because I use it with my 5" 9mm. The uppers can be swaped back and forth if needed but they have there own lowers.

If you can find them the 26 rd BDM mags are the best I have 6 and it makes it much better to use.

Get the mags in smoke or clear so that you can tell how many you have loaded. I can only sqeeze 20 into the 27 round mags. I guess they need to be broken in, OH DARN, another reason to have to shoot it.

Some of the dedicated uppers include:

Model 1 Sales
Spikes Tactical
Tactical Solutions

I have the Tactical Solutions upper but not shot it yet.

I'm using the CMMG kit in a 1/7 barrel and have no problems with inaccuracy. I can hit an 8" steel plate at 100 yards with cheapo bulk ammo. That's good enough for my purposes.

If I want to hit a 1" target at 100, I'll use real bullets. ;-)

I'm trying to find a source for REAL Colt/DPMS .22lr conversion mags...the BDM mags will NOT work with the Colt & DPMS kits due to a the need to have the ejector be part of the steel feedlips...and BDM doesn't have their version in production yet.

Not any more... and neither one they sold would fit the Colt/DPMS kit. I am holding out hope for the new prototype from BDM. Plus it rankles me to see those real Colt 10rnd mags for $50+ on gunbroker...

My thoughts exactly! I've looked at both the CMMG and Spike's conversion and think I'm leaning towards the Spike's right now. Any feed issues with your CMMG?

Actually, my CMMG kit had some teething issues by not going completely into battery every time but after about 100 rounds or so, it ran perfectly.

I have the Ceiner kit. It works good with the CCI Mini-mag ammo. It was a little picky with the 500 pk bulk ammo.
