Carolyn McCarthy promises senate bid
Carolyn McCarthy, currently a U.S. representative from New York, has announced that she will contest Kirsten Gillibrand in the 2010 senatorial election (assuming that Sen. Gillegrand stands for re-election).
Ms. McCarthy is a single-issue gun-ban representative. Her husband was shot by the lunatic Colin Ferguson in 1993.

Fear, anger, hatred, and greed. The devil's all-you-can-eat buffet.
Re: Carolyn McCarthy promises senate bid
Jeez, I hope so. That might get her out of the House. I cannot imagine her making it to the senate.

I don't pretend to understand New York politics.

I can't believe that the powers that be in NY would let her run, that seat is usually reserved for a foreign exchange senator like Hilly, Moynihan, or Kennedy.

Will there be a primary round for the special election in 2010 or just the general election in November?seamusTX wrote:Carolyn McCarthy, currently a U.S. representative from New York, has announced that she will contest Kirsten Gillibrand in the 2010 senatorial election (assuming that Sen. Also, I read that because HRC was re-elected in 2006, whoever gets elected in the special election in 2010 will run for re-election in 2012.

Based on my experience with people from NYC they think Putnam and Orange counties are upstate and anything north of that is another state.jimlongley wrote:I can't believe that the powers that be in NY would let her run, that seat is usually reserved for a foreign exchange senator like Hilly, Moynihan, or Kennedy.

I don't know. Various states have different rules for Senate vacancies.bayouhazard wrote: Will there be a primary round for the special election in 2010 or just the general election in November?
There will have to be a partisan election to fill Ms. Gillegrand's vacated house seat, and that could very well replace a Democratic with a Republican in the house --- not that it matters much at this point.

Yup! When I lived in "way upstate" for many many years, I was politically involved, and one of the movements I was involved in, briefly, was one to partition upstate from NY City. One proposal was to draw a straight east - west border from the corner of CT over to the NJ border near Suffern, another was to draw a line from the corner of CT to the corner of NJ where it meets the Hudson, and another was to cut the Tappan Zee bridge in half with the proposed border, and there were others. None of these schemes went very far, too many NY City politicians against it.bayouhazard wrote:Based on my experience with people from NYC they think Putnam and Orange counties are upstate and anything north of that is another state.jimlongley wrote:I can't believe that the powers that be in NY would let her run, that seat is usually reserved for a foreign exchange senator like Hilly, Moynihan, or Kennedy.
