Vehicle question...

Post by KD5NRH »

Odd question just came to mind as the PD was trying to identify a Frankenpickup.

What part of the vehicle is "the vehicle" as far as the law is concerned? If a car is pieced together from multiple preexisting cars, what part determines the VIN of the finished vehicle, or whether a new VIN must be issued?

On a salvage vehicle the VIN that is registered when titled should follow the vehicle. When you do a rebuild or register a salvage vehicle in Texas, there are a plethora of forms to be filled out. What is required depends on what has been replaced and who did the rebuild. Here is a website with the forms http://www.dot.state.tx.us/txdot_librar ... ehicle.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Any parts that are used must have completed bills of sale and you have to register the part serial numbers on major components like the engine, transmission, etc. on the forms, as well as an inventory of the parts used. If it has been properly titled and all component parts registered against the VIN, it should be no issue.
