Dems shift on gun issues

WASHINGTON -- The National Rifle Association warned in a campaign ad that if Barack Obama were elected president he would try to take away hunters' guns and ammo. But with pro-gun Democrats a powerful force in Congress, it's already pretty clear that there will be no messing with Americans' right to bear arms.
Twenty-two Democrats, including Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, joined Republicans last week in a Senate vote to negate the District of Columbia's tough gun-registration requirements and overturn its ban on rapid-fire semiautomatic weapons. More than 80 House Democrats voted for a similar measure last year.
"It was a pleasant surprise, but it's not a huge surprise that elected officials are listening to their constituents," said Chris W. Cox, the NRA's chief lobbyist.
It's not certain that the gun measure, attached to a bill on D.C. voting rights, will be a part of the final version of that bill. House plans to take up the voting rights bill this week were postponed Tuesday as Democratic leaders struggled over how to handle the gun issue.
But with six of 11 Democratic Senate freshmen voting for the proposal last week, it was a clear sign of where Congress is heading on gun issues.
"There has been a shift in thinking among Democrats in the last six to eight years, away from old ideas about gun control and limiting access to guns and toward ideas about how you actually reduce gun crime," said Matt Bennett of Third Way, a group of moderate Democrats active on gun-control issues.

Let us be ever vigilant and by all means, let us beware the "stalking horse".

When I read news headlines likes this, its proof to me that my recent upgrade to life membership in the NRA was a good investment. Lately, I´ve been purchasing gift memberships for friends of mine who I know are pro-gun (I do get their permission first). When they ask me how they can pay me back, I just ask them to renew when the time comes.

What a neat and positive gift to give, not to mention the positive recruiting method.Coogan wrote:When I read news headlines likes this, its proof to me that my recent upgrade to life membership in the NRA was a good investment. That is what Obama and his ilk are, I trust none of them.
They are only waiting for a more opportune time.

I would believe the message we've been sending by how many people, across the country, standing in droves to get into gunshows, and other retail establishments have sent a clear signal that it might be a good idea to stay away from the issue...
But then again, the recent comments by Holder tell me they are still keeping their hole card ready when the time and crisis are right for them to play it...
What we choose to do about it at that time...Well, that's anyone's guess...

Obama isn't going to go after guns. He is going to go after ammunition and ranges.

The thing to remember about Holder is that he isn't planning on running for office in the near future. He's not on the same playing field as a lot of Congresscrittersstevie_d_64 wrote:I would believe the message we've been sending by how many people, across the country, standing in droves to get into gunshows, and other retail establishments have sent a clear signal that it might be a good idea to stay away from the issue...

And the plot thickens....I don't trust them one bit. They are just waiting for the right "issue" or moment to pounce like wolves on a bunny rabbit. If we have just one nut, anywhere in America, go off with a gun and pull a mass shooting they will use the hysteria of that moment to rush through anti-gun legislation. That's why I keep hoping someone will go off the deep end and attack a large crowd with a tactical assault democrat.03Lightningrocks wrote:Don't forget, comrade Emanuel says to never let a tragedy go by without gaining something from it.
