Maybe you guys can appreciate this.

Post by Samurai Blur »

I've been really passionate about photography since I was a kid. A friend of mine and I got together and took some photos of him with his 1911 pistol he had just bought last year (took the pics right after he bought it). Anyway, with all the anti-gun people going around, there haven't been too many places that I've put this pick and got much interest or good feed back, but I thought all of you would be able to appreciate it. So, please tell me what you think.

I have a less edited version that isn't as rich in color as this one, but I'll have to dig through another hard drive to get it. I'll post it later if enough people are interested.

actually not bad --- depending on what your focus was -- looks to be the hand and ring -- diffidently not bad for not being pro or anything.

just more detail on the gun would of been better -- at least for this forum :cheers2:

My concerns would be:

1. where the gun is pointing, with respect to the camera/cameraman
2. position of the trigger finger

Neither presents a good example for gun safety.

The MIB thing is cool, but again, I'd have to say BoogerHook!!!!
and really, who shoots like that???? Most folks (the ones I've seen, at least) shoot with the thumb riding the safety....

as far as the actual pic goes, it's cool, but the reflection on the slide obscures the gun a bit, and you can't see the barrel. I do, however like the focu on the hand and whatnot, and the detail of the class ring is cool, though admittedly I have no idea if there's any significance to the ring. might be extra cool if it was a WestPoint ring, or Army or sumpin' like that.
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

1st thing that popped into my mind was boogerhook too!

Well, I don't know what a "boogerhook" is. I'm not sure what he is supposedly doing wrong when you say "who shoots like that?" He's holding the gun how I hold mine. I never put my finger on the safety, it's too close to the slide for comfort. Also, the ring is just a high school class ring from Texas High School. Sorry, it's not a West Point ring, although, he is a Marine.

It's Hollywood style photography, not a gun safety display. Photography isn't safe. I've chased after poisonous snakes, unarmed, to get a photo close up of one. Sometimes there are risks involved. If it makes you feel any better though, I did check the gun before I let him point it at me, and it was empty.

This is the other edit of it. As you can see, it's not so rich in color. I like this one better. I feel like it doesn't obscure the details as much, but the guy in the photo liked the first copy the best, so I kept it for him.

And, just to add, these are a couple more that I kept from that day. I'm thinking about entering one of these in an art contest in my downtown area this summer.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find the original, full sized file for this one so I just pulled it off of the Asian guy's Myspace page.

Thanks for all the comment and critique so far. :patriot:

booger hook is forum slang for trigger finger

don't remember who originated the saying but "keep your booger hook off the bang switch until you intend to fire" is our slang version of "finger off the trigger until ready to fire"

because most of us spend much time thinking long and hard about firearm safety, you shouldn't be surprised that most of the comments you received on this forum are more concerned about that than they are about the quality of the photograph

I don't have a problem with the boogerhook for a posed shot. Safety is never to compromised and the gun should be checked and rechecked, and checked again if the gun moves out of sight even for a second. Like everything else never let your guard down. I do have a problem with folks poking things in the trigger guard to take pictures of their gun to present on on the interweb. There are other ways of getting the desired effect. dowels, cartridges and shotgun shells have no businesses inside the trigger guard.
I like the shot, and the angle pretty kewl. The green reflection is a distraction. It's why I hate taking photos of shiny object. The narrow depth of range with the focus on hand and ring is interesting.
As far as thumbs go, I was taught thumbs parallel to the barrel. Getting the thumb to high is seems like a good way to get it bit.

Nikon D40x and Photoshop CS3. These were taken a couple of years ago in the beginning phases of owning my first DSLR camera.

And Killerfly, I never noticed that until you pointed it out, but now that you mention it... I don't know where the sights are LOL. I'll have to call him and ask about that I guess.
