Should Obama Control the Internet?

Post by pbwalker »

Should President Obama have the power to shut down domestic Internet traffic during a state of emergency?

Senators John Rockefeller (D-W. Va.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) think so. On Wednesday they introduced a bill to establish the Office of the National Cybersecurity Advisor—an arm of the executive branch that would have vast power to monitor and control Internet traffic to protect against threats to critical cyber infrastructure. That broad power is rattling some civil libertarians.

You can't control the spread of information. It's anti-American, and against the first amendment.
Only in the way the National Firearms Act and similar laws are against the second amendment.

Which is why the move to control the spread of information on the internet is just as wrong as the NFA is.

I agree. The problem is the soap box, jury box and ballot box have failed to prevent that.

Not just no, but... :mad5

Okay, I can't finish my thought on this because of the 10 year old daughter rule.
Remember, in a life-or-death situation, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

I understand why he wants the "authority" to do that (in order to stop a distructive internet worm for instance)

Having that authority, even if its initially for the right reasons is no good.
Problem is, he doesn't need that authority; ISP's would most likely do it themselves, and in an emergency, law enforcement could probably get a warrant to do so pretty quickly, which is how it SHOULD happen, if it should happen at all.
