Umm what the heck Texas?

Really the American flag is offensive? On Memorial Day?

Stuff like this really makes me angry when its in other places...but in Texas it makes me furious, because I hold THE great state to a higher standard.

Debbie McLucas comes from a patriotic family – her husband and both of her sons served in the U.S. military, and her daughter is currently deployed to Iraq on her second tour of duty as a combat medic.

So when McLucas arrived at work at a Texas hospital last Friday, she was stunned to be told that the Stars and Stripes she had hung in her office in advance of Memorial Day were offensive, and that the flag had been removed.

“I got into work, I was met by my supervisor and told that there had been multiple complaints, that people found the flag very offensive and it had been taken down," McLucas told FOXNews.com.

"I went to the office to retrieve it and found the flag wrapped around the pole, sitting in the corner on the ground. I was speechless."

McLucas, a supervisor at Kindred Hospital in Mansfield, Texas, had displayed the 3-by-5-foot flag in the office she shares with the hospital’s three other supervisors. McLucas said one of her colleagues, a woman who immigrated to the United States from Africa 14 years ago, complained about the flag to upper management, and the hospital decided to take down the flag.

"I was told that as long as my flag offended one person, it would be taken down," McLucas said.

She said the hospital told her that the American flag flying outside the building would have to suffice. "I was told, ‘There is a flag hanging out front, everyone can see that one. Is that not enough?’"

No, she said, that wasn't enough.

"It is more than I can even fathom, that you would find the American flag offensive, in America," McLucas said.

A Kindred Healthcare spokeswoman did not return calls for comment. Kindred issued a press release stating, “Kindred Hospital Mansfield has a great deal of appreciation for the service that many of our employees and their families have given to their country. We honor our veterans and active military through a variety of benefits and service programs. This was an isolated incident between two employees that we are working to resolve amicably.”

The statement went on to explain: “The disagreement was over the size of the flag and not what it symbolized. We have invited the employee to put the flag back up.”

And it will go back up and stay up, McLucas said.

"I do think they're trying to do the right thing. I have no reason to believe the flag won't remain there as long as I'm employed."
Amen to the women sticking to her guns, if only we could get some of our representatives in DC to have a back bone like hers then maybe we would not have to deal with Sotomayor...

Her bosses asked why one flag out front wasn't enough...which sickens me. When I was a kid EVERYONE on my street had American Flags flying constantly and amazingly no one complained.

She can go back to Africa if she finds the American flag offensive.

EDIT: OK that sounded offensive, ya'all know that's NOT what I meant, right?

When I worked at AOL, I had someone complain about an American Flag postcard I had in the front of my cube, HR told them to stuff it.

Honestly this site needs to take down the Texas flag at the top of the screen. It reminds me of all the blood and pain and sacrifice that made it the greatest state in the union. Oh wait, I suppose that is the point...

We know you didn't. Sickens me that an immigrant would tell someone who's entire family has served whether or not she can display a flag.

It was their choice to come here...if they find this countries flag so offensive, I'm sure they'd be welcomed back home in Africa. :tiphat:

I googled the hospital and e-mailed my opinion of them denying someone's First Amendment rights. Even though they invited the nurse to put her flag back up i told them i thought it was too little too late. They had already shown their true colors.

The hospital backed down big time after people called and the DJs in the DFW area spotlighted it.

Here is a more complete story:
http://cbs11tv.com/local/patriotism.at. ... 20415.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Key quotes:
Wednesday morning, however, our story received nationwide attention. We have received hundreds of emails and comments from people who had something to say about it.

...

Several dozen people protested outside the Mansfield hospital Wednesday. And a receptionist at Kindred's headquarters told us they received many phone calls.

Then, late Wednesday morning, Kindred posted on its website a statement about the incident. It reads, in part: "The disagreement was over the size of the flag and not what it symbolized. We have invited the employee to put the flag back up."

We talked to McLucas Wednesday afternoon. She says the hospital's local CEO called and apologized. And McLucas says the woman did tell her she could put the flag back up, which she has done. ...
This is the difference, being in Texas -- in california she probably would have been scheduled for multi-cultural sensitivity remedial training...

Nitrogen, that did not sound one bit offensive to me. And I've been told by friends and family that I tend to be overly sensitive to such things.

And I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment. I LOVE the First Amendment just as much as I love the Second. So I am all for anyone saying anything they want to say in this country. But just because one person SAYS IT does not mean another person must ABIDE BY IT.

She can be offended all she wants at the sight of the American flag. The basis of this country is the right to say what you believe and believe what you say. But no where does it say that the rest of us have to agree with you or alter our life one iota to conform to what you say or what you believe.

The problem doesn't lie with the dissenters, the problem lies with those who would agree with and/or fear the dissenters.

They definitely got a lot of heat on this. They have posted a press release and a youtube video from their president saying they were also offended and that the employee who made this decision was reprimanded. Their PR guys were all over this.

This woman was smart; she must have gone to the press. They had demonstrators all over the place yesterday with flags including uniformed Marines. Unbelievable this can happen in the US let alone Texas of all places. If the US flag offends you you really shouldn't be here. Glad to see we're taking back our state from the PC crowd. Now if only Perry would call a special session to sort out the voter id mess and our chl issues.

STATEMENT REGARDING AMERICAN FLAG INCIDENT AT KINDRED HOSPITAL MANSFIELD
Louisville, KY (May 28, 2009) – Kindred Healthcare, Inc. (the "Company") (NYSE: KND) issued this statement today regarding an incident involving an American flag at Kindred Hopital Mansfield:

We are offended one of our employees took down a colleague's American flag in our Mansfield, TX hospital. It was wrong and as soon as we learned about it we took immediate action to correct the situation. At no time did anyone at Kindred Healthcare instruct anyone to take down the American flag. This was an unauthorized act of an individual employee. The flag is now proudly displayed once again, and we apologize to all who were equally offended by this unpatriotic action, including the owner of the flag. We have reprimanded the employee and let them know we don't tolerate behavior inconsistent with our Company's values.

No. Not offensive at all. In fact, that is almost word for word what I told my wife, who moved here from Mexico when she was 8, when I heard this story. (My version had some words in it I can't duplicate on this forum.) She agreed with me wholeheartedly by the way. :patriot:

I got to watch the video one time and now it has been taken down. I wonder what sparked that.

I need a campaign started against my employer. They won't let me hang my girls of Dillon Precision calendar in my cubicle...oh, I guess it's not quite the same. :smilelol5:

Mike Huckabee talked about this this morning. He also pointed out the plight of a retired Marine who is being fined fifty dollars each time he parks his car in his own driveway by his homeowner's association.

What for?

He has three of those gold foil Marine corps decals on his back window, and the HOA actually has a rule against bumper stickers and decals on resident vehicles!

I think everyone in the neighborhood needs to pry off their car dealer and manufacturer badges as well.

Why on earth does anyone live in an HOA controlled neighborhood?

Tim, where is this neighborhood? Is it in Texas? That is preposterous. I know HOA's basically have the unchecked power of God, but I would hope there is some way to have that policy changed. Does this rule only apply if the vehicle is left in public view? Can he have the decals if he parks in his garage? Or is this a blanket ban on all bumper stickers for all residents of the neighborhood?

This kind of stuff makes my blood boil! :mad5 There should be some higher authority over all HOAs, condo boards, etc. instead of always having to take these stupid issues to court.
