If you're switching power supplies, I recommend FSP. They are the actual manufacturer for many other brands, and are the most reliable psu's around. They offer quite a few quiet ones as well.
In the past 7-8 years, I had a PSU popping on me at least once a year (I have *counts* 6 systems running in my house right now, counting my laptops). I switched to All FSP Psu's in the desktops and servers about 3 years ago, and haven't had a problem since.
Also, If you want quiet computing, nothing is quieter then Water cooling
I've been running WC since about 2001. Instead of 1 singular small high-powered fan on your processor, you have multiple larger fans mounted on a radiator elsewhere, and it's nice and quiet :)

IANAL, YMMV, ITEOTWAWKI and all that.

I changed out power supplies last month and I got this one:

My office is now silent again which is wonderful.

I stuck five of my computers in a closet, routed an a/c duct into it and an exhaust fan wired to a wireless remote receiver. FTW! Much quieter and no heat! Now to move the nas, I just bought and tested.

Re: For those of you who like a quiet PC
sigh, I want my own batcave too.... :-(
I tried moving most of my "servers" into a closet but it never worked out. I love enclosed spaces. I sometimes wish I could change my bed for a coffin. I would get a good nights sleep in a coffin.
edit: a coffin with temperature control lol

You would need at least an exhaust fan or it'll run pretty hot in there. Very simple, buy one of those restroom fans, for around 12-15 dollars, cut the square opening in the ceiling, pluck the sucker and run power somewhere in your attic and wire it to a wireless RF receiver, celing fan/light control for around 25 bucks at walmart. You won't get oober air flow but you'll notice cold air going under the closet door and hot air up out the closet ceiling.TexasComputerDude wrote:sigh, I want my own batcave too.... :-(

I initially ran the cables in my previous "computer" room, under the carpet into a closet. My new computer room, I run the cables flat under the closet door. As much as I hate the noise, I hate the heat as much.

nice setup, i've been planning something like that for a flight simulator, but I gotta learn some woodworking skills first. I want to build a complete cockpit.

looks like 6 seperate computers with a kvm switch to me...
I'd like a picture of how the monitors are mounted and how much the mount cost.

Let me ask you this...how much are you actually utilizing the resources on those boxes?caldvn wrote:I stuck five of my computers in a closet, routed an a/c duct into it and an exhaust fan wired to a wireless remote receiver. Don't get me wrong, I used to be the guy with Wyse terminals and servers all over the house...but I discovered the joy that is VMWare. One box, 5 servers. And I actually use the resources I paid for...instead of having a CPU sitting there @ 2% utilization. As for the NAS piece, load up a VM running FreeNAS. Supports CIFS, FTP, NFS, iSCSI, and a bunch of other proto's.
You'll save cash on your electric bill and minimize the large server count footprint.

Be honest now... that's not a computer room. It's a game room.caldvn wrote:You would need at least an exhaust fan or it'll run pretty hot in there.
