1215 - King John of England reluctantly signed the Magna Carta, often seen as the first formal bill of rights in the Anglo-Saxon world.

1775 - The Continental Congress appointed George Washington commander of the Continental Army.

1836 - Arkansas became the 25th state.

1844 - Charles Goodyear received a U.S. patent for his process of vulcanizing rubber. His story is a tragic one of financial trouble, ill health, and failing to benefit from his own invention.

1846 - The United States and Britain settled a boundary dispute about the border between Canada and the Oregon territory. You may remember the slogan "fifty-four forty or fight!" referring to the latitude of the border that the U.S. claimed earlier.

1864 - Arlington National Cemetery was established.
