This day in history - June 18

Post by seamusTX »

1812 - The United States declared war against the United Kingdom.

1815 - French forces were defeated at the battle of Waterloo in Belgium, ending the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte.

1940 - Winston Churchill made one his most memorable speeches:
I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be freed and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, "This was their finest hour."
1948 - The 33 1/3 RPM long-playing (LP) phonograph record was unveiled.

1977 - The Space Shuttle Enterprise, attached to a Boeing 747, carried a crew for the first time.

1983 - Sally Ride became the first American woman in space.

1872 - Susan B. Anthony was fined $100.00 for attempting to vote. Wonder how much that would be in todays economy?

$100 in 1872 is about equivalent to $1777 today.

BTW, Ms. Anthony refused to pay the fine, hoping that she could appeal the case to higher courts; but the matter was dropped.

That is not as much as I thought, but still a LARGE fine. She probably refused to pay due to lack of funds. :rules:

She probably could have afforded to pay the fine. In the previous six years she had earned $10,000 delivering lectures, and she had come up with $1,000 for bail (or someone had paid it for her).
