This day in history - June 25

Post by seamusTX »

1788 - Virginia ratified the U.S. Constitution.

1876 - Custer's last stand.

Here's a link to a newspaper story printed a few days later: http://www.nytimes.com/learning/general ... ml#article" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

1929 - Pres. Herbert Hoover authorized the construction of Boulder Dam on the Colorado River, later renamed Hoover Dam. It was the largest concrete structure in the world and the largest power station when it was completed.

1941 - Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 8802, which prohibited federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of race, religion, or national origin in employment. It was the first such federal measure.

1950 - The Korean war began.

The Israeli national airline El Al began service.

1951 - The first commercial color TV broadcast was transmitted.

Very few people owned color TV sets at the time. They were horrendously expensive, and the quality was awful.

1956 - The passenger liners Andrea Doria and Stockholm collided off Cape Cod and sank. Andrea Doria was the largest liner in service at the time.

While less deadly than the sinking of Titanic, it was a memorable event for people alive at the time.

Oops. The Andrea Doria sank on July 25, 1956, not June 25. I'm sorry about that.
