1778 - Mary Ludwig Hays (spelled variously) courageously assisted her husband in loading artillery in the Battle of Monmouth. She is known to history as Molly Pitcher.
1820 - One Colonel Robert Gibbon ate tomatoes all day in public, in Salem, New Jersey, "proving" that they were not poisonous. Until that time, North Americans and some Europeans thought that they were.
A skeptic once wondered why someone hadn't tried and failed earlier to commit suicide by eating tomatoes.
1894 - Labor Day was established as a federal holiday.
1905 - Russian sailors mutinied on the battleship Potemkin. The event exposed fissures in Russian society, but the Czars held on another 12 years. The mutiny probably would have receded into history, except for becoming the subject of a classic film directed by Sergei Eisenstein in 1925.
1914 - Austrian Archduke Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, were assassinated by a Serb nationalist in Sarajevo. The great powers of Europe had been looking for an excuse to go to war for years, and this event provided it. Fighting started a month later.
1919 - The Treaty of Versailles was signed, ending World War I. The peace following the "war to end all wars" would last only 20 years.
1950 - North Korean forces captured Seoul, the capital of South Korea.
1967 - Israel declared Jerusalem reunified following the Six-Day War.
1971 - Daniel Ellsberg was indicted for leaking the Pentagon Papers. Charges were dropped nearly two years later.
1978 - The U.S. Supreme Court handed down the Bakke decision, establishing as a legal principle that fixed racial quotas in affirmative action programs could result in illegal reverse discrimination.
