1865 - William Booth founded the Salvation Army in London.

1935 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the National Labor Relations Act

1944 - Harry Crosby flew an experimental rocket-powered airplane, the Northrop MX-324, on its maiden voyage.

This area of experimentation lost out to the jet engine.

1946 - French engineer Louis Reard unveiled (so to speak) the bikini swimsuit at a fashion show in Paris. It was named after Bikini atoll in the Pacific, the site of an atomic bomb test days earlier. The swimsuit was promptly banned in many countries.

1971- The 26th amendment was certified, setting the nationwide minimum voting age at 18. It was ratified in 100 days, by far the quickest process.
