1890 - Wyoming became the 44th state.

1925 - The "Scopes Monkey Trial" began.

1929 - U.S. paper currency assumed its current dimensions (bills used to be bigger).

1940 - The Battle of Britain began with air attacks by Nazi forces on southern England.

1962 - The Telstar 1 communications satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral.

Telstar was the first satellite paid for by a non-government agency -- AT&T -- and the first to transmit live television between North America and Europe.

After the initial excitement, it turned out that few people in the U.S. actually wanted to watch anything live from Europe. :???:
