1916 - William Boeing founded Pacific Aero Products, the forerunner of the Boeing Co., in Seattle.

1971 - President Richard Nixon announced that he would visit Red China, eventually giving rise to the saying, "Only Nixon could go to China."

1933 - Wiley Post, a native Texan, began the first solo flight around the world, departing from New York eastbound. He completed the trip in less than eight days, though he "cheated" by sticking to high latitudes.

1952 - Two U.S. Air Force Sikorsky H-19 helicopters began the first transatlantic helicopter crossing. The trip took 21 days with numerous stops.
