1587 - A second colony was establilshed on Roanoke Island, Virginia. The first baby of British ancestry born in North America, Virginia Dare, was born there the next month.

The colony was out of touch with Great Britain for three years. When British sailors returned, no man, woman, or child remained, and no record of what happened was found. Their fate remains a mystery.

1916 - A bomb set off during a Preparedness Day parade in San Francisco killed 10 people and wounded 40.

Preparedness Day was an occasion to anticipate the United States' imminent entry into World War I. It was opposed by isolationists of the day, some of whom were communists and anarchists. Two labor activists were convicted but later pardoned when irregularities in their trial were revealed.

The real perpetrator was never found.

It was the eighth deadliest terrorist bombing on American soil (counting Sept. 11, 2001). Now forgotten history.

1934 - John Dillinger was shot to death by federal agents in Chicago.

A weird romantic myth has grown around Dillinger, along with conspiracy theories. The man was a sociopathic thug.

1955 - Vice President Richard Nixon presided over a cabinet meeting, the first VP to assume the duties of the President when the President was ill.

Earlier VPs had taken on some presidential duties when the President was traveling.
