Seen the sign at 7-11 that has a pistol with a slash mark?

Post by gringogigante »

I am a CHL instructor and tell my students that if it doesn't have 3006 sign, then it's legal (obvious exceptions not included). One of my students asked what to do at his local 7-11 which has a sign showing a pistol with a slash going through it.

He feels that the implication is that they don't want anyone to carry in there. He feels that if something were to "go down" in there that he would be prosecuted by 7-11.

I told him that if they were serious about it, then they wouldn't have spent the time and money to print up those stupid signs and would have spent the same or less time and money making a 3006 sign. I also told him that he needs to be less worried about minutiea and focus on the simplicity of the rules.

ANy ideas?
Thanks!

Advise him that he is correct about 7-11 not wanting him in there armed. He is incorrect about being prosecuted since all 7-11 could do would be to give him a proper criminal trespass warning. You are correct about the simplicity of the rules.

Maybe put it this way:

1. 7-11 can make any rules they want on their customers. This includes requesting them not to wear masks or carry guns.
2. The law says the only way to be prosecuted is to post specific signs or tell the specific person orally.
3. 7-11 has lawyers that get paid to know the law. They are fully aware of the legal requirements.
4. Posting the sign they did can be taken as a request to comply but not a legally binding request.

That sign just means "Please don't shoot the lock off the door."

Sounds like a corporate policy of don't ask, don't tell and don't display. But come right on in, pardner.

There are plenty of those and other spin offs that are not 30.06 signs posted in convenient stores all around this college town, and I walk on by. I also heard that a convenient store very close to me was held up last week. Yeah, I think I will stay armed in a convenient store...and if they have a 30.06, guess I will be going to the next place to get gas!

I thought that sign meant "Clerk is unarmed"

The cops don't call 'em "Stop And Robs" for nothing. I remember one in Beaumont in the mid-70's down on Railroad Avenue on the fringe of a "socio-economically challenged" neighborhood. On a weekend, it was nothing for it to be hit two to three times in a single night.

I thought it was "no open carry" or maybe a prohibition on Berettas.

Definitely don't ask at 7-11 or you'll get oral notice. In fact, it might be best to avoid supporting 7-11 with your money at all. They're on the NRA's list of "most prominent national corporations that have lent their corporate support to gun control initiatives or taken position supporting gun control."

That's a good one. Those gunbuster signs are everywhere. Ostensibly, they're posted to protect the property owner from lawsuits - if someone gets shot by a bad guy, the management can say, 'But we had a 'no guns' sign posted!' I ignore 'em.

Or... it could mean, "Bad Guys, come on in. Shooting gallery inside."

Maybe someone should write them a letter telling how the sign is all wrong. Better still, go in and tell the manager how his sign isn't legally binding on CHL holders. Then they will think your really really smart and take the sign down .:grumble
