1914 - The first transcontinental telephone conversation took place.

1952 - A North American RB-45C Tornado completed the first nonstop jet flight across the Pacific from Alaska to Japan.

1958 - President Eisenhower signed a bill that created NASA.

1967 - An accident aboard the USS Forrestal in the Gulf of Tonkin killed 134 servicemen and injured 161.
