This day in history - August 11

Post by seamusTX »

1934 - Alcatraz prison began operating.

1945 - Japan offered to surrender on conditional terms, which the Allies rejected.

1965 - The Watts riots began. The next seven or so years saw widespread rioting in U.S. cities during what were called "long hot summers."

1984 - President Ronald Reagan, speaking into a live microphone that he thought was off, said that he had "signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."
