1835 - The New York Sun began publishing a series of bogus stories claiming that the moon was inhabited.

Though debunked a few weeks later, it was an economic success for the paper.

1916 - The National Park Service was established.

1944 - Allied forces liberated Paris.

1950 President Truman ordered the Army to seize control of the nation's railroads to avert a strike.
