y2k was such a disappointment...
I do remember people driving cars up and down the highways with flashing lights and doomsday messages in the latter 90's. Saw one again for the first time in nearly 10 years a few weeks ago. I imagine I'll see lots more over the next few years.

Some periods related to time and the calendar are based on natural phenomenon. Length of year, length of lunar month, length of day.
Seconds, hours and weeks are arbitrary units. Our current system of 28/29/30/31 day months is once again just an arbitrary hack to make the solar year mostly come out right.
Where it all gets crazy is that the "beginning" of any of these recurring cycles is once again arbitrary and most likely based on a political event rather than a natural event.
Also, the base that we decide to count in makes dates like 12/21/12 interesting, but choosing base 10 is just a consequence of us choosing not to use our toes also when counting. We could have just as easily ended up being base 20 and I believe some ancient cultures were.
All that said, I think the world will explode in 2012, and you should give all your ammo to me for safe keeping.

Penn and Teller did a show on it and got many points across this season on bull. It was a good watch and made me believe that nothing is going to happen.

New Ager's have always said that something is going to happen in 2012. I first heard that in the early 80's and it keeps popping up from time to time.
I'm not worried. Psalms 46:10 "Chill, I got this." God.

So how did the Babylonians end up with a base 60?
I love getting into this stuff, 360 day calendars with the extra days as feast days or such, ten hour days, twenty day months, variable calendars that only the priests knew, and all that kind of thing.
