1787 - The U.S. Constitution was signed by a majority of delegates attending the constitutional convention in Philadelphia.

1793 - George Washington laid the cornerstone of the Capitol in the city of Washington, D.C.

1862 - Battle of Antietam, the deadiest day in U.S. military history, 23,100 dead.
