1779 - John Paul Jones uttered the immortal words, ""Sir, I have not yet begun to fight!" during a naval battle in which he captured the British ship HMS Serapis and lost his own ship, the Bon Homme Richard (named after Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanac). It was a shocking loss to the British and turned the French government in favor of backing the U.S.

1806 - The Lewis and Clark expedition returned to St. Louis, where it had set out three years earlier.

1952 - Richard Nixon, who was a vice-presidential candidate at the time, delivered his "Checkers'" speech.

Checkers was a dog that a Texas political contributor gave to Nixon's daughters, young children at the time. The speech probably was Nixon's most passionate and humane moment in public life.
